By scraping the "shaving edges" with a blade, you will accumulate a pile of magnesium shavings. Then simply scrape the "sparking insert" to ignite the shavings to temperatures of 5400°F/2982°C, hot enough to light even the most stubborn campfire! Mag. scrapings burn too quick. Ok as a back-up firestarter but other styles are better. I took the rod off and put it in a s-kit.
