Ok, first the good. The handle shape and feel in the hand is great, the texturing is perfect, until you grip it and that awful excessive jimping on the edges of the liners bites into your hand. I still love this knife but the first thing I need to do is attack it with a dremmel. This said blade centering is perfect, smooth fall shutty type action, axis lock and M4 steel. This is why, even though it is actually painful to grip this knife as it comes out of the box, i'm still giving it a 4 out of 5. (Posted on )
    2. 6 month update !Review by

Well it’s been around 6 months now since I’ve had my CPM M4 contego and it’s now my favourite steel (Apart from Maxamet) and since I’ve had it I’ve used it every day just about and I still don’t need to sharpen it. M4 is a High Speed Steel that is mainly used in drills and other machinery that needs a good red hardness but because M4 is a high carbide super steel it holds an edge far far longer than say CPM 3V or even 10V and S110V. It really is a fantastic steel because when it gets dull a little stropping and it’s right back up to hair whittling sharp again so even though it’s about 65 to 67 HRC it still does not act like a hard super steel. My rockwell machine says this is 65 to 66 HRC and for a steel this hard and forgiving as M4 it is unreal. I would definitely like to see HH get more knives in CPM M4 because it’s a better choice than say D2 or 3V. The only draw back is that it’s not a stainless steel but if your like me and you meticulously look after your knives then this shouldn’t be a problem at all ! Given the choice I’d rather buy non Stainless steels anyway, for there durability and performance characteristics ! (Posted on )
    3. Elegant and beautiful with the bite to match its looksReview by

Firstly I’d like to thank the guys at Heinnie Haynes and in picticular Richard who has really helped me and I’m really happy and appreciative for the help.

Wow !, what a knife and in CPM M4 High Speed Steel no less. Just to give you an idea how tough and hard this alloyed High Speed steel is, is the fact it’s used in Drills and Tap and dies and central lathe tools and burrs for die grinders so this steel is made to cut and machine steels which means it’s very very hard and tough stuff. Benchmade has not hardened this to its full potential as its Rockwell HRC at the drilling hardness is 65 to 67 Which is ZDP 189 territory but Benchmade didn’t go there for reasons like resharpening issues or wanting more flex or bendabilty in order to give it more toughness. The only 2 High Speed steels I know that can trump the CPM M4 is CTS Micromelt Maxamet and CPM Rex 121 both of which are in the 71 to 72 HRC area so I hope that will give you an idea of how good of a steel this is for extreme knife steel. The handles are really well done with the fit and finnish been of Benchmade quality which is very good indeed. The axis lock is smooth and well tuned and snaps with a very satisfying snap when it engages the locking mechanism. Over all this is a very beautiful and elegant knife with the looks to match its knife which arguably is the heart and sole of this little marvel of engineering. It’s one of those “Little Big” knives.

Had this knife a few months now , came sharp out the box but was not as sharp as I would like. Only needed a few minutes to tune up the edge to how I like it and the edge is holding up very well. Been using it a lot at work cutting through very thick cardboard and it just slices though it like butter. I love this knife (Posted on )

Just received the contego in black, VERY NICE,what a difference the black makes.. Everything about this knife is spot on,LOOKS,BLADE STEEL,CENTRAL,BEVEL,HANDLE ,AXIS LOCK...even got a bit more of a clunk on opening with this one[which i prefer] .Idid a review on the ONSLAUGHT yesterday, everything spot on with that aswell,i think BENCHMADE are really at the top of their game at the moment,GOOD ON EM!! The ONSLAUGHT ,as i said was better than some knives a lot more expensive where as the CONTEGO AT £164 feels very much worth it [Especially with the M4] A very good heavy duty folding knife that will last years,i am very happy about getting this one..Well done BENCHMADE,likewise H.H and a special big thanx to NICK!!! All the best all,and good luck with the move.. (Posted on )

GOOD WORKING SIZE,VERY STRONG/SHARP M4 BLADE,QUITE HAPPY WITH THE SCALES, WHETHER THEYVE TONED THEM DOWN I DONT KNOW,BUT THEN IVE GOT BUILDERS HANDS ,QUITE COMFY ANYWAY. I LOVE BENCHMADES AXIS LOCK,SMOOTH AND RELIABLE,IVE GOT OTHERS AND BY GUM THEY OPEN QUICK,JUST A QUICK FLICK..JOB DONE.. THE CONTEGO IS THE QUIETEST AXIS OPENER IVE HAD,ME ,I PREFER THE CLUNK BUT SOME MAY NOT?? I STROPPED THIS KNIFE WHEN IT CAME,ALWAYS DO,AND JESUS THIS TAKES A KEEN EDGE,AND EVEN WHEN FEELING HOW SHARP IT IS YOU CAN SOMEHOW FEEL HOW HARD THE STEEL IS COMPARED TO OTHER STEELS. THIS IS A VERY, VERY NICE KNIFE AND IVE JUST SAID THE SAME ABOUT THE RECON 1,GET ONE WHILE YOU CAN!!! MY ONLY REGRET IS I DIDNT HAVE THE PATIENCE TO WAIT FOR THE BLACK BLADE..NOT A PROBLEM THOUGH,JUST AN UNUSUAL BLADE COLOUR FOR ME. THANX H.H (Posted on )

I've had this for several months now, where I've carried it on patrol. Very robust folder that's built with toughness in mind. The M4 blade came insanely sharp and with even grinds. Edge retention is amazing. Fit and finish was and is still excellent.
It gets a couple of minuses though. It's quite a large folder and eats up some pocket space. The knife is slightly blade heavy, which is purely subjective though. I don't like deep carry clips, but unlike the Triage's, this one can be swapped for the regular BM clips. The jimping was very aggressive, but I gave the scales a go with some sandpaper, which made them much more comfortable in the hand. I've read on another forum, that Benchmade have toned down the excessive jimping on later models. All in all, minor issues on an otherwise great knife. I'd recommend it to a friend and colleague.

    8. Quiet and almost perfectReview by

All my favourite Benchmade knives open with a grip on the axis lock and a quick flick, the Contego is no exception. What makes it "top two" is that it can be done quietly and locks silently, a big plus for some users.
The blade is very sharp and well shaped for strength and ease of use.
First impressions are that it sits very naturally in the Ice Pick style grip.
A first class addition to BM's Black Range.
