Benchmade 319 Proper Micarta

Benchmade 319 Proper Micarta

£143.95

Description

The Benchmade 319 Proper Micarta is a simple yet modern take on a classic gentleman's knife.

With a non-locking blade under three inches long it is a UK friendly carry knife with some really high end qualities.

The blade uses a bang up to date steel in S30V which retains an edge much longer than many inferior steels. Also the sheepsfoot styling is a very popular blade shape due to its adaptability. The handle is green micarta which is hard wearing and weather resistant plus there is a hole to customise with your favourite lanyard.

The quality of the knife was excellent. Perfectly centred and shaving sharp.

The micarta looks great with the sheepsfoot blade shape and is nice and grippy. The knife is friendly-looking for an EDC.

    A great knife!

This is the perfect pocket knife. Note, no pocket clip, yay. Has a lanyard hole, yay. That's 5 stars unless I find something wrong. I love my PK70 but closed it does have a well known tang to catch. Not the Proper. What makes it a great knife in the pocket is that there are no sharp transitions to catch, every transition flows smoothly. Thin at just over 10mm, also light. I love the understated micarta and its nicely textured. The sheepsfoot variant is both useful in urban task but also non-threatening. Adequate closed retention shouldn't damage nails. Pinchable in good grip conditions. The open lock-up is not excessive but appropriate for a pocket knife. It releases gently which is a characteristic I prefer over firmer lock-up but sudden release, particularly where the half-stop isn't finger safe. Not got a lot to say about S30V. Over spec'd for what I see as a mainly urban duty pocket knife. Would have been perfectly happy with a grade lower steel at a lower price point. But the point is I splashed out at the price point even though I already had the red G10 version. That's how much I rate the Proper. (Posted on )

I’ve had this knife for a few months now and it’s still holding its own in the competition for my EDC. I’ve a few knives and, of them, a few that fit the ‘everyday’ bill. Two PK70’s (carbon fibre & G10/titanium) and a limited edition Taylor’s Eye Witness Barlow are generally my favourites, but others sneak in (Böker+ Wasabi, Puma IP Birk, Kershaw PUB), but this gets more than it’s fair share in my pocket.

On the plus side it’s small, light, well made, sharp, holds that sharpness and takes wear well, becoming more attractive as it wears in. The action is positive, but not a nail breaker. The ‘lock’ is positive and takes a gook push to fold. On the negative side, it looks a little understated and utilitarian. It’s also quite thick so doesn’t slice like the Barlow, Wasabi or Puma, but it gives you confidence that it’ll never let you down.

A final thought. I liked it so much that I’ve bought the blue limited edition version as well. I’ll keep that in the cupboard as a collectible, but it’ll be nice to know that, should the micarta one ever let me down, I have a spare!

  4. Nice done UK legal knifeReview by

Can’t really say much more than what other reviewers have written.
Fit, finish and overall quality is excellent for the 319 I received.

The green micarta fits the steel liners perfect and has a very nice tactile feel to it. Very much like the blade shape and the swedge they have put in it. Very sharp out of the box.

I like the way Benchmade have rounded the edges on the blade tang so the closed, half stop and open positions are decently strong but they arrive in those position softly. No chance of losing a nail when opening or a finger closing it like with my Boker Plus Barlow.

Overall a nice slipjoint from Benchmade. Comparable with other traditional slipjoints in the price range.

HH processing and delivery was again superb. Ordered 2pm Friday and at my door Saturday morning with standard free delivery

I received my 319 Proper today, unfortunately not from HH as they were out of stock and i'm impatient (sorry guys, i'll still be buying a lot more from you) I can honestly say that this is one of the best knives i've held in my hands. It is remarkably comfortable, the simple ergonomics are extremely well suited to my hands. I tend to find that my first three fingers grip the handle with my pinky finger cupped the heel of the handle. The blade came razor sharp out of the box, probably sharper than any other knife i've received, this isn't normally a problem for me if it's blunt as I like to sharpen and touch up blades, but this one simply didn't need it.
The micarta is lovely, I have a real obsession with green canvas micarta at the moment and this is a little darker than the photos, quite smooth to the touch. The action of the knife is smooth with a reassuring click as the blade snaps into place and a decent half stop. It won't snap closed as much as a swiss army knife or any other traditional knife but this does not bother me.

If you're on the fence about buying this knife, just order it. It's worth every penny.

  6. Very slim, excellent quality Review by

Had this for a few weeks now. Was surprised at how slim it is, thin scales which makes it very comfortable in the pocket. Micarta not as textured as I expected, quite smooth, but gives good grip; absorbs moisture and could stain a bit but then aqiires character, now it's been in my pocket a while the micarta is almost polished on the edges giving a nice used denim look. Very good quality. (Posted on )

I have been carrying this little knife for the past few days and thought I'd put some of my first impressions into print, as it were.

First off, I have to say that it was certainly not love at first sight where this knife is concerned. I found this a smidgeon surprising as I have a number of Benchmade knives (Mini Barrage, Rift and Volli) in my carry rotation when I am home in SA and I really enjoy using them. Benchmade build quality is always excellent, using good materials and showing brilliant fit and finish. That being said, after using the 319 over the past few days I have found myself liking it more and more.

    Pros:
    - Excellent materials
    - Fantastic fit and finish
    - Good ergonomics
    - Great blade shape
    - Non-threatening profile that shouldn't scare the knife-*

    Cons:
    - Blade could have been sharper out of the box
    - Quite pricey compared to other knives in this size range

Some final thoughts - S30V can be a bit of a pig to sharpen at times but it should hold an edge for a reasonable length of time (I can't comment on edge holding after 4 days). After tweaking the edge on my Lansky, the knife is now razor sharp and cuts superbly - it has made short work of cardboard, cable ties, biltong and so on.

I usually hold my Enzo PK70 as the benchmark for all UK-legal knives in terms of materials, fit and finish and usability and the Benchmade 319 is one of the few knives I have found that matches it. In fact, it may actually be better...

  8. A great little knifeReview by

Congratulations on your service it is second to none again. I ordered this on Friday afternoon and the postman was knocking on the door at eight forty five on Saturday morning.
This is a great little knife, it's just the right size to slip in your pocket. I have been converted to Benchmade since buying a presidio a Knife that has great build quality. The 319 has that same quality of build. The slip joint opens with a solid sturdy click and feels good in the hand. After touching up the edge on my Spyderco sharpmaker it is now super sharp. I haven't had it long enough to know how well it holds the edge but after reading up on the steel is should hold up well. This is the perfect knife to accompany my more heavy duty knives when I am out and about where I don't need to do any heavy duty knife work. It just fits my pocket without any lumps or bumps.
So all in all I would say that this is a great knife with superb build quality for every day carry, it's so easy and comfortable to just slip into your pocket and It isn't so big or scary looking when you get it out to use you are going to get non knife users running for the hills.
