    Fine for the price

For this price you're not going to get a top quality blade but it's fine for what it is. The tang is too deep for a hidden tang handle and too shallow for fulltang. Fortunately it's not too hard to mill or file down. I also opened up the holes to 6mm to take larger rivets/pins, again no problem with hardness. I haven't checked the actual blade for hardness. The brass guard is very thin so the handle has to flare out from it quite a bit to fit your hand well. None of these issues should prevent you making a decent knife out of it.

    For the price, surprisingly good!

Posted by Treeman on 10th Jun 2015

Purchased this, along with the other 3 of 4 blank bowie blades, and apart from the fact the brass bolster being rather small and would not protect your fingers 'much' if you had to use it for defence, all the blade were fine. They were well finished, straight and with adequate tang length for any handles you put on. I used red liners and brass spacers, with Laburnum, White Birch and Hornbeam for the wooden handles and with the file work I carried out around the top of the blade and tang, they have all turned out great! Anyone interested in seeing the finished kinives,*

    Good for the money

    Posted by unners911 on 10th May 2014

Bought this blade as a small project being a newcomer to knife making. This is the second item i have purchased from Heinne and once again the service, communication and speed of delvery is second to none. However i have a small gripe regarding the blade. The brass bolster/finger guard was poorly fitted and badly made.It was not straight when you eyed it down the blade. Also it is very narrow,so if like me you wanted to put a wide handle on it you will have to taper it very sharpley to meet the bolster. That said it is good value for the money, and a lot easier than making it from scratch.

    Adapt and use

I bought 3 of these Bowies, I dulled the edge and plasti dipped the handles and use them as throwing knives. Surprisingly they are well balanced , throw and stick very well into the log rounds. They seem to robust enough to take the knocks well.
