    4ins. Gut hook blank

    Posted by 243 on 4th Dec 2021

Update; Got a third one of these at 8£8 & went to town on it. With an angle grinder I reduced the width by removing the 'filework' then I Carefully cut off the gut hook to create a nice, tough drop point knife with a 95mm. blade. A stacked Maple, brass & Oak handle with a brass lanyard tube completed the project. The blade sharpens up very well & this is now a handy, tough knife. I still don't know why the tang is such a daft shape, though - it causes the slot in the brass guard to be much too big. I slimmed down the tang & made my own guard. Still a good project blade for any aspiring knife maker.

I got one earlier this year to practice on & I've now added another to make a better project. The tang is short & unusually tapered in the opposite direction to other blades. The tang is slotted & I put a 4mm. Brass pin through this on my first blank but intend to braze a threaded rod on my new version. The hook is difficult to sharpen, being narrow - I used a round needle file. The blade is a good weight & thickness & sharpens up quite well. A good value product that's a little different from the norm - recommended at only £8.
