Preppers and Prepping – The Basics

What is prepping?

According to the Oxford Dictionary prepping is: “The practice of making active preparations for a possible catastrophic disaster or emergency, typically by stockpiling food, ammunition, and other supplies”. (http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/prepping) The UK Preppers Network however, have their own definition: “Preppers are Survivalists in a calm state of  Emergency Preparedness”.

Who are Preppers?

They are essentially guys and girls who are preparing for disasters that could change life as we know it. Before your mind starts thinking about alien invasions and probings, we aren’t talking about that. We are talking about: “Solar Flares, EMP, Nuclear Wars, Economic Collapse, Pandemics, Meteorite collision and lower down on the list are things like, Tornado, earth quake, flooding etc”

It’s not about Zombie apocalypses and under ground super bunkers. It’s simply about hoping for the best and preparing for the worst. Not by going over-board like you see on some TV shows but by storing and collecting food, equipment and other essential supplies

What are the basics of prepping?

There are three main threats to your survival. If you aren’t prepared for these then you haven’t prepared well enough.

•Exposure

•Dehydration

•Starvation

To combat these three threats, there are four immediate responses to ensure survival –

•Shelter

•Water

•Fire

•Food

Some of you my be aware of something called ‘Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs’. In this pyramid, Maslow believed that basic needs are said to motivate people when they are unmet. Also, the need to fulfil such needs will become stronger the longer the duration they are denied. For example, the longer a person goes without food the more hungry they will become. Therefore, a person must satisfy lower level basic needs before progressing on to meet higher level growth needs.

If you look at the very bottom of the pyramid, you’ll see that the physiological needs of people are almost exactly the same as the principles of peppers and prepping. These are the fundamental’s of life. Prepping doesn’t sound so mad now does it?

Let’s now delve further into the four methods of ensuring survival

Shelter

Shelter can come in a wide variety of forms. You can either build shelter yourself or find yourself one. Things like survival blankets can serve as well blankets, or they can become shelters and used as a roof.

Shelter is essential to stay warm at night and/or in winter, or stay out the sun/heat in other climates. Without it you are exposed to the elements and vulnerable. Find it or make it, either way it’s important.

Water

The adult human body is about 57-60% water (http://chemistry.about.com/od/waterchemistry/f/How-Much-Of-Your-Body-Is-Water.htm). That’s a heck of a lot, so you can imagine what happens when you don’t have enough. Fear not though there are ways of ensuring that you have safe drinking water:

The reason we give these examples is simple. You want to have the ability to purify water on the go. If you are on the move, you want to carry as little a possible. Carrying a filter for a bottle just isn’t viable.

Fire

One of man’s first discoveries. One that is still essential today, not only for heat, but for cooking, safety and light. It’s a resource that can provide you with multiple uses, to tat effect it’s invaluable. So how do you make it? Well in the 21st century you are no longer expected to rub two sticks to each other or strike two slabs of flint together (you can if you want, but it’s not overly necessary).

So the options available to you are things like (but not limited to):

The reason behind the choice of the above products comes down to two things: Usability and ease of carry.

Food

Food comes in a range of forms. Now it’s really important here you have a range of options again. You need the ability to hunt, cook and eat. In addition to that you also need ready to go food stuffs. Food that you can have on the go instantly. Food like:

Moving past that you would also need cooking equipment. Something light, durable and easy to use/maintain.

Now, these are just options. Prepping is more than just buying a few bits and being done with it. If you want to know more about Prepping there are some awesome websites out there to help you such as the UK Preppers Guide.
