Back in January I reviewed this knife and gave it three stars. Having lived and worked with it for a bit longer I now think that I was probably a bit harsh. I retract nothing about Buck's back spring issue on their slip joints and I maintain that they make very fine blades - this being one of them. A knife is meant to slice and cut and Buck blades (including this one) perform that function excellently. I am impressed that with no liner and a nylon frame Buck manages to produce a knife with no lateral play. The build and materials mean it is breathtakingly light and yet you can still use a chest grip to cut bigger branches than you might expect. When it comes to fine slicing the Rival 1 is in its element. For the price and given the quality of the build even allowing for the limitations this knife is a real bargain. (Posted on )

Another UK legal EDC for the collection. This is an excellent knife for the price. Blade is sharp, slip joint firm and the whole thing is well constructed and functional.

It is marketed as one handed opening, which is true with a finger thumb grip to start then manipulating the knife in hands to complete but not really a swift one hand opener. I've added a thumb stud which works well and made this one of my go to knives.

Pocket clip is well placed, handle is a nice shape and grippy. Overall this is an excellent blade for the price.

I love Buck knives... no let me clarify that statement - I love their locking folder 110 and their fixed blade knives 119 & 102. I have, with much chagrin, come to the conclusion that slip joints are a stop gap, an after thought and I have bought quite a few including this one. This one is US made, with a good blade , it is amazingly light and comfortable, and it disappears in the pocket, if like me you don't use pocket clips. The styling is not really my thing but I really wanted to like this knife, it was winning. But, if no one has coined the term "Buck backs pring syndrome " then they should. Their more traditional folders all seem to suffer from soft back springs, beautifully smooth but scarily prone to breaking away and this little one is no different except in how it does it. Where with the others you can feel the spring slowly let go, this one doesn't have that spring back when you apply pressure - I can only describe it as a locking knife where they have removed the locking mechanism. Like I said it has some very fine qualities but I only wish a decently strong back spring was one of them! (Posted on )
