    Not an Axe

Posted by jonathan penny on 4th Mar 2024

There are many video reviews on other sites for this knife. I was surprised how many gave it brutal treatment and then complained that the guard became loose. Honestly if you drove your mums run around down a mountain would you complain if one of the wheels was hanging off. It's a massive knife and you'll probably never use it for anything but if you are looking for a Texas letter opener this will make you feel a great sense of value.

    Cold Steel Wild West Bowie

Posted by Chris on 20th Sep 2023

After giving away my collection of knives prior to moving house several month's ago, I realised recently that although I gave away my knives I still have the itch to collect. I decided to concentrate on my particular favourite, the Bowie. I have always, at least since I was lucky enough to see the John Wayne movie The Alamo as a boy and made up my mind that I would get myself a Bowie. I'm many years older now and over the year's have owned many knives, many of them of course Bowies. We have been aware for some time now that the style of knife which we assumed previously to be that of Jim's Iron Mistress is not necessarily so, but whether it is or not the design of the present day knife is close enough for me having read the account's of people now gone. This is the second Bowie I have acquired since I decided to start my new collection and although it will be thought of as a budget knife it is a Bowie as we now know it in appearance, with a large carbon steel blade and brass Crossgard. Considering the price for this Impressive piece of cutlery I am very pleased I took the opportunity to buy this knife, having read the reviews, not all complimentary but not all bad. The knife is blade heavy obviously, it's a big blade but I think it feels good in the hand because of the full tang and brass crosspiece, indeed all the brass furniture which add weight to the handle and help to balance this large knife. Point of balance appears to be approximately 1.5 inches above the brass crosspiece. There was very little oil or grease on the blade but the scales we're covered in what appeared to be heavy redish brown paint which I think was commented on by Gordon in Oct 2021. I scraped and sand papered the paint off as far as possible but the scales have absorbed the colouring which is not so bad once with the application of a few coats of teak oil. This will be one of my favourite Bowies, I consider whatever work I have put in to the knife has been a bonding process between me and my Bowie. The blade appears to be reasonable material and the brass crosspiece is solid. I doubt the scales are rosewood but I am not an expert on timber. The sheath looks good although the leather is thin, I would have liked to see a thickrer welt. Also it would be nice to see the blade designation stamped on the blade. I am pleased that I went for this knife, none of these small things I have mentioned will detract from the enjoyment of owning this Bowie. The blade is good, sharp out of the box, the brass is solid and with a little love the handle will improve . I think you should buy this knife and give it some love. I don't think you will regret it

Built to a price, not a standard

Posted by Gordon on 26th Oct 2021

I was looking for a Bowie knife similar to the Western Cutlery W49 as supplied in 1965 to US 5th Special Forces at Fort Bragg. The Cold Steel Wild West Bowie is a bit larger and has a carbon steel blade which takes a decent edge. I know these are made in India by Windlass for Cold Steel. The product arrived in adequate but basic packaging, with the knife enclosed in a taped plastic bag and the leather sheath wrapped in paper. There were two problems with the knife: 1. the whole knife, including the scales were covered in a viscous yellow oil, rather than manufacturers grease, which had penetrated the unsealed scales, causing the deep red dye to mark anything it touched, even when the knife was cleaned and left to dry. (I don't understand why dye would need to be applied to rosewood scales) , 2. the bottom 1.5 inches of the blade had been left completely unsharpened, (the part needed for feathering sticks), so this needed remedial work with diamond stones and stropping to bring it into line with the rest of the blade. I'm aware this is a budget knife, so shouldn't expect too much, and service is always great from Heinnie Haynes, but I feel QC is sadly lacking at Cold Steel for a product to be released in this state, and I'd have been prepared to pay a bit more if the knife had been properly finished. I'm not dismissing Cold Steel as a brand, as I have other products I'm satisfied with, but I really feel they need to improve product quality for this one.

    Great knife... but

Posted by UK Mike on 9th Jun 2021

Great packaging delivery blah blah blah. Had the knife less than a week. Got the request to review today. Which was the day .. So I was bragging to my Gardner who uses a hori hori dig-dig knife ... who was most impressed .. until the the safety snap broke off! Literally it just fell on the floor! So the knife is snug in the sheath for now as it’s brand new .. but in a while when it’s all supple, who knows? Bragging rights? He pays £25 for a knife and sheath, I pay £112 and the fking sheath falls to bits at he takes it out (with care) Knife great Sheath poxy Price You’ve got to be kidding. I hate writing reviews like this I’d rather be delighted and bragging. But the sheath build quality made me look like a twat. No impressed not happy not coming back

    Cold steel wild west Bowie

Posted by Alan on 9th May 2021

I have been wanting this Bowie knife for a while now and was glad when Heinnie Haynes notified me by email that it was back in stock. As usual the delivery and ordering process was very good . Now the knife ,it has a very nice leather sheath which feels solid in the hand and as for the blade ,after I cleaned off all the grease that it was covered in ,all I can say is wow ,love the handle which fits well in the hand and the knife doesn't feel too heavy considering how thick the blade is.if I was being picky the brass guard has some slight discoloration on it which I think came from the grease the knife was covered in ,but apart from that ,really pleased .

    Wild west bowie

Posted by Steven Nelson on 23rd Apr 2021

I waited a long time for the wild west bowie to come back in stock . After a good wipe down of blade and handle i am very happy to say i have a perfect example. No issues anywhere on this knife . Plenty sharp for this kind of knife and feels hefty and solid in hand . The sheath is nicely done . The wild west bowie makes a perfect partner to my frontier bowie in my collection. Both knives from cold steel offer, in my view , amazing value to both a collector or someone who intends on putting them to hard use . Knives like this which are hand forged and assembled are a rare thing these days . Get one while they are still available . Delivery and service from HH was superb as usual.

    Big and cuddly

Posted by Mark b on 1st Oct 2020

A nice chunky Bowie at an excellent price. The sheath is a well finished, heavyweight leather and it fits well without being too tight. The knife arrived very sharp and the handle is comfortable and offers good control. If you want a heavyweight Cold Steel bowie at a cheap price buy this one, an excellent choice for collectors or very regular use. I may have also tested it as a thrower and it flys straight and true, not something to attempt with your San Mai Natchez bowie.

    Outstanding.

Posted by Martin on 21st Jul 2020

I got this awesome Bowie from my wife for my 54th & it's outstanding. Weighty, but well balanced, excellent fit & finish as you would expect from Cold Steel. Mine was not as sharp as I would have liked, but its a preference thing, easily remedied with my DC4 & CC4. The stealth is very well made & unlike most sheaths, the retention strap goes across the top cross guard, rather than the bottom, thus removing any possibility of catching it with the blade. Overall I'm extremely happy with the knife. Of course the service from HH is as always first class, even in these difficult times.
