Description

The CRKT Liong Mah Folder has achieved legendary status as a UK friendly to carry knife. Its simple slip joint mechanism and powerful build has seen it become one of the most popular EDC carry knives on the market. Out of production for a while it is now back due to popular demand, not least from us here at Heinnie Haynes HQ!

Designer Liong Mah has a simple purity to his knife designs, which transcend old style qualities with modern technologies and materials. The 5 model features Mah's deep, hollow ground blade style that provides a stout cutting edge from tip to choil and finger guard. Broadly shaped G10 scales use finger grooves and surface profile to afford versatile grip even with its desirably small stature. You will find the slip joint locking mechanism a refreshing throwback in a contemporary design, and the fob/tether is a nicely added benefit.

For the knife user who wants maximum blade in a "low-drag" carry, these are it.

Short review of the CRKT Liong Mah #5Review by

Firstly let’s get ordering & delivery out of the way.

I ordered the CRKT Liong Mah #5 at approximately 15:00hrs on the 27 Dec & it arrived at 10:00hrs on the 28 Dec! If that isn’t a fast service I don’t know what is.

I’ve been carrying penknives since I was 10 years old, about 40 years now, so I know what I like, or what I thought I liked!
I’ve carried Victorinox knives for years now but recently I re-evaluated what I want from a knife. I asked myself which ‘tools’ on my knife did I use the most, so I kept a note every time I used my SAK over a 3 month period.
After the 3 months I found that I only used 2 ‘tools’, the main blade & (twice) the bottle opener.
Then came the hunt for a new knife that was UK ‘legal’, had a decent blade & was simple to use & sharpen....I’m not the greatest blade sharpener in the World.
As soon as I saw the CRKT Liong Mah #5 I knew this was the knife I wanted.
It is comfortable in the hand, the clip doesn’t affect my grasp & it fits in my pocket perfectly.
It’s not heavy, probably not much more than my SAK but it feels substantial in the hand.

My only gripe, as one of the World’s worst knife sharpeners, is the blade wasn’t super sharp out of the box. It was OK but it did need sharpening.....which I surpassed all expectations & actually got it really sharp.

The ‘lanyard’ is pretty grotty but I always make my own paracord lanyards so it’s not a problem for me. I suppose it serves a service but it doesn’t really need one.

All in all I’m extremely pleased with my purchase & more than pleased with HH’s turn-around speed! Outstanding service.

Classic EDC makes a comeback!Review by

I'm glad that this knife's come back in stock, as it gives other people a chance to own a piece of classic product design... Strangely enough, I'd sort of forgotten about mine (my Viper Dan 2 seemed to have taken it's place), then for what ever reason, decided to dig it out & sharpen it the other day, when I read that Heinnie's were restocking them, along with a limited run of red ones too!
It's a brilliant little workhorse, that feels good to use. It's got a sort of 'big blade' feel to it, without it looking scary or being in any way 'tacticool'... Mine's back as my EDC, and I'm really enjoying it all over again... Obviously, I bought a red handled one as well, to complete the set...!
Hats off to Heinnie's to be able to twist CRKT's arm into doing another production run, and it goes without saying that their service was, once again, faultless...

This knife caught my eye when browsing as I fancied another EDC. I love the look and shape of the blade, it's simply too heavy and doesn't feel right in the pocket especially when wearing work shorts. So for this simple reason I am sending it back. If CRKT make a lightweight version I'll be first in the queue to buy one. So my bench made Mel Pardue stays for the time being. (Posted on )

First, I think H.H. must have a time machine.
I live in the Isle of Man and I ordered this item about 2pm on a Friday and it arrived Saturday morning.
Amazing.

The knife (add to my review all the positive reviews above)
For me, this ticks all the boxes a d some I never knew I had to tick. It is beautiful to look at, it feels like it was built for my smallish hands and I instantly fell for it.
The blade came in very sharp, no side movement and was tight enough. I made it even tighter by adjusting the pivot. I only did that in order to take out the one-handed opening option.

This is a stunning, high-quality knife that will last a lifetime.

Here is another useful tip:

A week or so before I bought the G10 black scale Boker Tech 4 and they go together like they were made for each other (even down to the pattern on the G10). Further, the hex screws that hold each tool together are the same size (except for the pivot screw on the Liong Mah). So, should you feel that you need to carry a tool for full disassembly, you need only two bit drivers.

As the quality of both these is very, very high and they work and look so good together, I would recommend making them a set.

Over-the-moon on the Isle of Man. These two will get a lot of my time. . .

This knife is brilliant, I mean seriously.

The movement is slick and feels wonderful with a nice solid feel to it. The blade stays sharp fairly well and sharpens up beautifully ... I really can't fault it ... except ...

This is a small point, but I had mine for several weeks before I had to put it back together again. The stopper that "locks" (though obviously it isn't a lock per say) the blade, dislodged and I had to unscrew the thing, tinker with it and then screw it back together.

Having said that, in the knife's defence, I do have a horrific tendency to fiddle with things to the point of destruction.

Either way, I haven't had any issues with it since and I still love it.

Once again HH delivery speed was akin to witchcraft ... Love it!

Fast delivery from HH as usual, the knife was sharp enough for out of the box.

The knife passed my "apple test" I can slice an apple just fine with it. I did have doubts that it would be useful for slicing because of the thickness, but it's ok. I regularly use it in the kitchen.

Out of the box I found I could open it with one hand with a bit of practice. However, one hand opening is not important for me, and although there is nothing in UK knife law about one handed opening, the police don't really like OHO knives.

I tightened the torx bolt up, so OHO is not possible and the blade is more secure in use. The choil helps too.

I've used this to baton split logs, it stayed open and hasn't got a mark on it. The knife is built like a brick *house.

Get one while you still can.

As always it comes down to price for the price this is a great little knife. Have seen reviews about niggles. I don't understand them. It's not going to be fantastic its not a £200 folder. What it is is great. I can open it with one hand if I feel like it. Easy to sharpen. Not a big deal if I loose it. Does not shout confiscation and arrest. Is uk legal strictly speaking, although you need to be sensible as always in the UK. The handle is not very grippy, but take your time and its ok. You can avoid the niggles by buying an all singing all dancing lock knife. Just hope you don't get stopped and have it confiscated. Worth the money. It won't close on your fingers due to the design. This knife is just fine for a number of reasons. Despite some other comments, I think it is reasonable value for money, at 30 plus ukp. It is a fairly well built and robust knife, which for me, sits well in the hand, and in the pocket. It would be fairly difficult difficult to close this knife on yourself, unless you were incredibly careless. I've been using knives of all sorts for years, both in civilian, and other scenarios, and I can not recall an occasion where I have had a real and genuine need to "deploy" a folder one handed. Therefore, although this knife can be opened one handed, perhaps awkwardly, it troubles me not, that it easier opened with two hands. No doubt, in some scenarios, that fact could well work in ones favour. For me, the fact that this knife sits deep in the pocket whilst on the clip is good. Again for me, the appearance of the knife is far less intimidating than many others in , or indeed above it's class. Maybe its just me, but I feel fine carrying this knife, because it's a good, sound tool, which is in my opinion, fairly elegant in it's lines, (Posted on )

Anyway the knife is solid and sharp, looks good and for the money you can't go wrong. What I will say is when you start collecting do your homework and learn as much as you can so you understand what you want to collect, for me I have decided to collect UK legal knives so I can enjoy using them, however with all the different blade materials and handle materials you can be more specific like UK legal and blades made from 440c stainless steel. There are so many knifes to choose from but I highly recommend these Liong mah folders as a good place to start.

Really nice knife but with a few niggles. First one, really nit picking, the little lanyard it clones with is cheap as and detracts from the knife. Took it off after a couple of days and added my own.
Secondly the scales do get slippy.
Next, it's not the easiest of knives to open single handed , there's a technique, especially when you're had to tighten up the friction because of my final point.
Even when you are holding the knife in a full grip the blade will easily try to close on you unless you increase the friction by tightening the bolt.

Even though it may sound like I don't like the knife for this week it's been chosen as my EDC.

I realise I am bucking the trend of 4 and 5 star reviews here, but it is a 3 from me. Don't get me wrong, this knife is really quite good in and of itself, probably just about a 4 star knife, but there are one or two things that keep it from beating its competitors.

Firstly, the blade is good. It came very sharp and its thickness means it feels really tough. It certainly feels like one of the more heavy duty UK legal knives around. The thickness does detract slightly from its slicing ability, however. I know a lot of people are not a fan of the one handed opening of this knife, but I have never had any real problem with it, sure it isn't very fast deployment, but it is certainly not difficult for me personally.

The G10 scales are very smooth and offer little grip but they do look quite nice for it. The finish on mine was not excellent. It is not bad, but there are one or two areas on the finger cutouts that just look poorly finished. It is not as heavy as it looks, but sometimes I like a bit of reassuring weight behind my knives. It is fairly comfortable in the hand but I had to remove the pocket clip because, for me, it just dug into my palm whilst holding and it is not reversible. It is a shame because the clip itself is strong.

The slipjoint back spring is pretty dreadful. I realise that ease of opening/closing is important on an EDC but it just takes the slightest amount of pressure for the blade to close. The finger choil is designed to essentially work as a "lock", and it does, but for me it is just too weak a back spring. It almost feels like it would close in the wind.

This is not a bad knife by any stretch. And judged alone it does have a lot going for it but I just feel that, for the price, it is well beaten by some of its competitors. Its nearest competitor is probably the Spyderco UKPK, and for me, it has the Liong Mah beaten is every single department, but that is just one man's humble opinion!

I like the non locking blade, for most lighter jobs a find it easier to operate that a frame lock,

As pointed out the blade is a little thick, and deployed, contrary to some others on here , I think it may look a little bit fearsome for a UK legal cary, the frame and grip feels slightly light for the substantial blade however.

Overall its a very good knife that pushes the UK legal cary envelope, a little tweaking of the blade thickness and width and for me slight thicker grip would make a better UK EDC. but then it would be a different knife, and I might still think that at less than 40 Quid i would get one of these as well

I have all the regular EDCs carried & reviewed by many here: I rotate between a Boker XS, a Byrd Wings, and a Swiss Army Knife, depending on mood and dress. I really like the Liong Mah: good looks, solid. As there are other good reviews here I'll note only that it has a very thick blade. On the up side it's not likely to bend at the tip when used for prying like my Boker XS did. On the downside it doesn't pass the "apple test." That is, trying to cut my lunchtime apple, the shoulder of the blade is so thick it breaks the piece off. So it's a good blade for cutting but not for *slicing*. It is also a touch tricky to deploy. But all in, a great purchase and a nice knife. (Posted on )

I picked up this little number recently when I went looking for a decent UK Legal EDC knife, and so far I have not been in any way disappointed.

If I had to describe it in a word, I would say "Reassuring." The slip joint, while not locking, feels solid enough for most things one would use an EDC knife for. The whole knife feels solid under use, and was very sharp out of the box (not quite shaving sharp, but close enough that it can be taken to that stage with minimal effort.) The hand feel is excellent, withthe grip guiding your fingers directly to teh best position to use the blade safely, and while the practical side is primary, this little thing is definitely a good-looking piece of equipment, aesthetically pleasing, as well as eminently practical; I'm not especially worried about using this as a UK legal EDC (unlike some of the more well known EDC choices which I find look a lot more threatening.)

Frankly, I have to nitpick in order to find fault with it, and the only nitpick I can come up with is that the toggle cord really isn't up to much, but replacing it with either a paracord or leather thong would probably be childs play (and on my listof things to get done.)

For the price point, and for it's feature and purpose, its hard to argue with this knife as a primary EDC for the UK.

It's a beautiful piece of kit and is very well made. Well centred blade, takes a good edge, deep pocket clip which is sturdy, deploys smoothly, thickest blade on a UK legal pocket knife I have seen, G10 scales and simply feels great in the hand..
I don't mind that the scales are polished and smooth as it helps it slide in and out of my pocket, after all it's a pocket knife not a combat knife and once it's in your grip it feels secure at least it does for me.
I have a few UK Legal carry knives now, yet this one is the one I find myself reaching for the most, in fact if I could only keep one this would be the one I would keep.
Great service from HH as usual which seems to be their hallmark so it's been a pleasant experience for me.
I only bought this knife if I am honest as I was board and maybe a little "click happy" with the mouse and it's turned out to be one of my favourite knives, possibly my favourite and I have knives that cost multiple times more than this.

First class bladeReview by

First things first, the little issues:
1) The blade was a little dull and had a few nicks in it out of the box. This was quickly sorted with a run over the fine stones on my Sharpmaker and a little stropping. It's now shaving sharp.

2) The cord on the toggle is a little coarse and while it gets the job done, it's quality didn't suit the rest of the knife. This was another easy fix, replacing it with a paracord braid.

3) The blade retention is a little weak, with the knife closing if a little pressure is put on the ridges on the top of the blade. More of a niggle than a major problem, as blade guard prevents it from closing on your fingers.

Now the good bits:
1) The size. I have fairly large hands, and with UK knife laws its hard to find a decent knife that fits that I can actually carry. Take for example the Lansky World Legal. It fits nicely in my hands, but is the size of a small moon, so it doesn't fit easily in a pocket. The Liong Mah fits my hands perfectly, but its small square profile and very deep pocket clip mean it fits well in my pocket, but is never hard to find.

2) The looks. Unlike the only other knife at this price range that I considered, the Boker Plus XS, the Liong Mah doesn't look too threatening to worry about carrying.

3) The Blade. It's not often you find a UK legal knife with a blade this thick or deep. It doesn't flex, and feels solid and weighty in your hand.

Conclusion: The Liong Mah #5 is a brilliant knife to EDC in the UK. It's build quality is high and its handled every task I've thrown at it so far with ease.

I like a knife with scales each side plus liners and a lanyard capability. This fits the bill perfectly without excessive thickness or weight. I also prefer a "less threatening" blade profile. As supplied it’s probably slightly "pointy" for my liking but I've now very slightly re-profiled the tip. Thanks to the steeply curved spine the appearance is not affected. Anybody unfamiliar with the original profile would not notice.

Quite a substantial blade, starting off at about 4mm but then thinning due to a substantial hollow grind and the OHO milling. Note that it doesn't take much force for it to close but it has a substantial and effective finger choil. Just as well as it arrived razor sharp.

It was always legal but I will feel much more comfortable carrying the re-profiled tip.

I'd been toying with the notion of buying one of these simply because of its looks (and that it's UK legal). The reviews are a bit mixed, but overall positive. Now I own one and am like many others in that it falls a little below expectation. It opens easily enough; fit and finish are good; blade sharp enough for almost any task except shaving........it just lacks something, but I'm not sure what. It'll remain with me as part of my EDC collection and will be used as required. It just won't be the first knife I reach for. Impeccable service from Heinnie Haynes, as usual. (Posted on )

For a UK legal knife, you can't grumble much at this.
It has a thick blade which is suitable for everyday stuff and has a wide handle that is fairly comfortable for prolonged use.
It isn't the slimmest knife around, quite chunky in fact, but it feels quite tactile in your hands. Good for playing in your hands,

Bad points. The knife edge needed a bit of work before it was sharp enough. The pivot screw needed tightening.

Good but not perfectReview by

I bought this knife as an alternative to the Boker XS that I usually carry because I wanted a UK-legal knife that looked a little less "tactical".

OK, so the things I like are a well-shaped, substantial blade, nice and thick with a decent grind to it. Really sharp out of the box and easy to open with one hand. It is also light and easy to carry with a very nicely designed, deep-carry pocket clip. The deep index finger choil does a fantastic job of stopping the knife closing on your hand in use.

There are a few things that I don't like though. I have no clue why they smoothed the G10 scales, it must have added cost and certainly reduces grip. I also find the handle quite uncomfortable with the second finger choil being placed at a bit of an odd angle. The liners also feel a bit too prominent when gripped, possibly because of the open-frame construction & narrow liners.

All in all, it is a nice little knife but certainly not perfect. HH service as legendary as usual.

Don't get me wrong there are plenty of improvements needed in the design here. Like the deployment for one.

I do think it is a little over priced compared to it's competition. I also wish the liners were skeletonised a bit more. The first thing I did was cut the included lanyard off.

However it is a decent size, very deep pocket clip, the blade shape and steel is also quite good.

Lovely knife to own even if only for the aesthetics alone (I do not know enough or understand enough to comment on the quality of the steel, but the edge was shaving sharp on arrival).

The only minor concern I have is regarding the locking mechanism, while I do not have vast experience with slip joints it is a little slack. Having said that, the finger choil should protect anyone using the knife correctly, it's certainly not a stabbing implement.

Fantastic service from Heinnie Haynes and I look forward to carrying this knife.

This knife is great looking, I really like the elegant design. It feels very comfortable in the hand, and the polished G10 scales look and feel great. Obviously they offer less grip polished, but with the intended use of the knife, and the grippy finger choils, this doesn't concern me. The polished scales means that it slips effortlessly into a pocket, while the clip keeps it secure. The blade is a great size and shape, and came razor sharp. One thing to note is that I cannot comfortably open this knife with one hand; it's a bit of a shame that it wasn't designed with a stud. That said, I love it - it looks and feels superb. Top service from Heinnie as always. (Posted on )

This knife is beautiful. Very well constructed too. However, my main concern is the fact that the slipjoint (it's not even a traditional slipjoint) is terrible. The blade easily closes during use. Luckily the decent size finger choil prevents a full close. Would have given this 4 stars. But mine has some mill scuffage on it. The finish isn't excellent. Not sure what others are like. However, this makes a nice casual EDC blade if you're doing light tasks. (Posted on )

This is a great looking knife and when you pick it up you can just feel the quality. It feels really solid in your hand but it's not too heavy. In the short time that I have owned this knife I have used it for cutting branches in the garden to slicing a chunk of cheese, it has cut everything that I have thrown at it with ease. The choil is just right and I would imagine that you would have to try really hard to close it on your fingers. All in all I would recommend this knife to anyone who is looking for a good, nice quality EDC. (Posted on )
Excellent UK pocket folderReview by

This is my first UK legal carry pocket knife (all my others are locking). It is a great little knife. As someone else said there really could do with more traction on the handle and some more jimping around the thumb and forefinger area but it is a pocket folder and you will not be using it for extreme uses. I think the price point is about right as it is good construction and very sharp out of the box. Other good points are light weight, deep carry pocket clip and wide blade for good cutting area.
Highly recommend for a UK EDC.

Nice little folderReview by

Ordered this over the Easter weekend, and have pocketed it since. This is a really nice little knife, feels good in the hand and the blade is good and sharp out of the box with a decent heft to it. The G10 and satin hardware looks posher than it costs, which makes this a really smart looking "gentlemans folder".
The ball detents are positive and the pivot is easily adjustable so you can make it looser or stiffer to open / close.
The nail nick is interesting, not quite OHO but it can be done. I've ground down the second finger ridge which doesn't really make OHO easier, but it does make the knife a little more comfortable (warrantee? What warrantee?).
I was thinking of paying double for a nice looking gents knife, and while I'll probably still buy the Enzo I was lusting after, this will be a good place sitter in my EDC rotation.

If you've not got one get it ordered. It's the best legal EDC knife I've ever had. I've been looking for a knife like this for years. I'm a lefty and it's perfect. (Posted on )

Finally, the perfect UK EDC!Review by

First of all, I've had the Spyderco UKPK, and as great as it is, it's not perfect for me. This knife sorts the issues I had perfectly.

The scales are smooth, which is better than G10 for me as it glides from the pocket when clipped in. It is very secure in the open position but without the loud 'clack' which can fool some into thinking there is a lock.

There are too many nice discreet little touches to mention here. It fits well in the hand and is truly razor sharp, popping hairs easily. A nice weight and screams quality!

Great UK EDC optionReview by

First, the downsides; the G10 scales have no texture/grip whatsoever so it's a little slick in hand. Also, rather than a thumb stud or hole, you have this kind of slot. It is functional, but not the easiest to operate, so no speedy deployments. You can decide if that's a plus or a minus yourself. Lastly, there's the lockup. There is no back spring, just pressure on 2 ball detents. It does the job but it doesn't take much force to close the blade. Thankfully the generous finger choil stops it from closing on you so it's not a big deal.

The knife is very comfortable in hand and I love the blade shape. It is big enough for day to day tasks but you won't scare the sheeple when you break it out. It feels much more substantial than my Spyderco UKPK and although the blade is slightly smaller it doesn't feel as delicate. As I said though, the UKPK wins hands down on the lockup strength which gives a little more confidence.

All in all, a great addition to my UK legal EDC rotation.

An excellent knifeReview by

This is a great knife, sharp out the box and a fantastic quality feel to it. It's wider than I thought from the picture but if anything that's a plus. So many UK legal knives feel flimsy. Not this one!

HH service outstanding as always! I don't think I've ever had as good an online shopping experience as I get from you guys! Keep up the good work!

Do you know if there are any plans for the CRKT Liong Mah #6 to be re- released in the near future ? Thanks for your time.
A:
Hello Peter, we requested it be recomissed in red and there was a few in black left. Plain edge was the most popular and I do not hink they will put it back into production unless demand is high sorry.
