Down Under Outback Eclipse

Down Under Outback Eclipse

Because black is the new black.

The Outback has always been Down Under's most popular knife, and the most upgraded throughout its lifetime. Whenever they find a way to make it even slightly better, those changes tend to inevitably end up in the next production run. However, all along this development cycle, one recurring theme kept coming up - granted, mostly from people who had never used one, but it's a valid point nevertheless.

What if there wasn't just improvements... but a choice?

Well, that choice is here today. Meet the Outback Eclipse - the proven Outback design in 1095 carbon steel and all dressed in black. The handle is all leather and dyed through in deep black. It comes with the same improved Mark II sheath design as the latest classic Outback, only in black. The solid brass guard and pommel feature a high gloss polish, and the 58-59 RC heat treated blade guarantees it's every bit as rugged and dependable as its stainless steel sister we all know and love. It may look slightly more fashion conscious and you might find yourself oiling it a bit more often, whether it's entirely necessary or not... but it's still guaranteed not to slip on a turtleneck and wander off to sip a latte when there's work to be done.

  1. Update after a yearReview by
Can't believe it is over a year since I bought this knife. It has certainly lived up to expectations, keeps an edge very well, probably much better than the stainless version which I also have. But it needs some care and attention, I have kept the blade out of the sheath as not to do so would guarantee corrosion. I have also kept it oiled and I have used 3 in 1, Olive oil and it is currently covered with 3 in 1 paste. However even with these precautions I still have a couple of black marks appearing on the blade, only small at present and not a problem and will probably come off with some work. But this is a mirror finished knife in carbon steel so bear in mind that you will have to look after it if you don't want to lose the looks, which is really a great part of the appeal.
The sheath is overly tight on this one and my stainless knife and I have found a neat trick to sort that out, just put the long plastic attachment on your vacuum cleaner, in my case a Henry and shove it as far as you can get it into the sheath, then leave it there for a day or two and hey presto the knife goes in and out of the sheath very easily but without any play, no need to wet the leather, I did both of mine dry and the difference is great and the knife still secure.
I have bought a number of knives and gear from Hennies since buying this, and they are in my view the best supplier in the UK, incredibly fast but also good for advice, and you always get what is promised, the slightest problem and they sort it out presto.

  2. outstanding piece of kitReview by
i bought this to take on my backwoods excursions - you get a lot of carbon steel for your money!

it's a little big to be exactly practical but seeing how it's heavy and can be very sharp it does a great job of splitting and hacking smaller branches for shelters and making things, meaning you don't need an axe too, so i tell myself, it's fine, everything makes sense.

the build quality is high and the handle seems very robust. the case is well designed but does miss a lower strap since this thing is long and ideally, you'd want to strap it to a belt then round your leg too but really, it's not a huge problem and i'm very happy with this purchase.

  3. Outstanding Review by
So I have just received this knife from my wife as a birthday present, from HH who as usual gave a world class service.

I am over the moon with this knife, it is as big and a beautiful as you imagine. Mine unlike some I have read about came pretty sharp out the box, leaving me enough to enjoy putting a shaving grade mirror edge on it.

After reading the reviews below it is worth mentioning that 1095 carbon steel dose require a little TLC, a quick wipe with an oily rag after use, but if respected 1095 is formidable.

What a stunner! and far from a gimmick this piece is solid!

Oh dear, Robert has learned about carbon steel the hard way - always, always, oil your blade, mate. Like MM says in the review before Robert, "Love it".

Just noticed, Henny Haynes have evn written a blog about it look at the link belwo

  5. Already tarnished and spoils the look of an otherwise great knifeReview by
Unpacked the blade and initially very impressed. It was well oiled in the plastic cover it came packed in so didn't apply any additional oil before putting away in sheath.

Took out today and one side is already heavily tarnished. Not impressed.

Wish now I'd gone for the stainless version.

  6. A good alternative.Review by
I bought this because I wanted the stainless version bu t they were sold out. All due to the Dundee film anniversary apparently. I actually prefer this version, it has a carbon steel blade which should keep it's edge better. But this a knife to be looked at as well as used, and I prefer the brass on the pommel an d the guard against the black of the leather grip which sinks into your hand. It is blade heavy, but not enough to be unmanageable. Beautiful yet very very capable, also the shealth is black which I prefer.
I ditched the sharpener and fake teeth and it looks much better for it in my view.
Great service and advice from Richard over the phone as usual.
