Fallkniven F1 Survival

Description

Fallkniven Model F1 Swedish survival knife

With this knife a World standard is set! Important factors such as technical design, ergonomy and economy are brought together within the model F1, and represent the foremost concept available today. The knife meets and surpasses by far established international standards for strength, personal security and value for money.

the Fallkniven F1 is the official survival knife for pilots within the Swedish Air Force since 1995.

Mod. F1 represents an entirely new philosophy with respect to knives for survival use. At the same time it combines the experience of generations of knife manufacturing with modern technology. The handy size, the well thought-out design, the incredibly tough laminated steel are only a few of many details making this knife something you can rely on.

Mod. F1 is a handy knife and is tremendously versatile. The safe, pleasant grip together with a very hard yet tough laminated steel, makes the knife very useful for all kind of daily work but also demanding tasks. You can choose from two kinds of sheaths -  an all-covering pouch type, which safely houses the entire knife or an extremely tough double-safety, one hand operated zytel sheath.

The Fallkniven F1 Survival knife is available in an all-black design, with the blade coated in black CeraCoat 8H. In addition to reducing the risk of unwanted reflections, the Teflon coating gives further protection against corrosion. If the knife is to be used in salt water environments, we recommend the Teflon coating.

I've had the F1 for a couple of years now. I bought it as a 'bushcraft' knife and at about the same time, a very good carbon steel scandi grind knife with a birch burl handle, and the two make a good comparison. The burl handle fits my hand like a glove, better than the rather thin handle of the F1. Both sharpen up very well and hold their edge. The burl-handled scandi looks much nicer. However, at the end of the day, I tend to choose the F1 when I go out. I can't define exactly why, I just like it more; it just seems to 'work' better. Being stainless I can use it for camp cooking and gutting fish and with the Zytel sheath I never have to worry about it getting wet and staying wet. So it may not be the prettiest knife, but it feels really solid in the hand and as a working tool, I don't think it could be beat. (Posted on )

I have owned and used a lot of knives and I mean a lot and have always said that there is no perfect knife and no one knife for all things and I still maintain this, however, after owning and using the Fallkniven F1 for a while I think I have found the knife that will always be with me, no matter what else I am carrying or using.
The ergonomics of the F1 are close to perfect, the blade to handle ratio is just right, the laminated VG10 takes a super-fine edge and keeps it, even after some hard work, the weight and balance could not be improved and as long as you don't try and use the knife for tasks that it was not designed for, you will not be disappointed with this blade. The only thing I have had to improve is the sheath, the leather one is good for storage, but a nice deep Kydex sheath with Tek-Lok makes the F1 the complete package, buy one, buy two, you will never regret it.

Ok so first things first I was umming and arrrring between this and another knife on this site. Quick email to Richard and a speedy response later my mind was made up. Placed my order at 17:09 and the package arrived at my door 10am the very next day absolutely amazing service, you would think that after all my previous experience shopping with Heinnie I would no longer be amazed but this level of service will never get old.
Now onto the F1 itself it's true that it will win no beauty contest but immediately it felt practical in the hand. The blade is convex and came real sharp straight out the box, I stopped the blade a few times for good measure and now it's just scary sharp. I decided to head for the woods and put the knife through some tests. Feather sticks we're made easy, quickly and in abundance. Next some battoning, and again the F1 made light work of the task. I then used the back of the blade on a ferro rod and huge hit sparks were produced with ease. Living in Wales we get a lot of wet weather and all these tests we're carried out in the wet. The handle was a joy, no hot spots it wasn't cold to the touch and the grip kept things nice and safe. After all the tasks the blade remained shaving sharp and with absolutely no micro chips or damage to the blade. This knife feels like it could take some real abuse and last a lifetime I hope so. So if you are thinking of purchasing one but are unsure as I was just do it you won't regret it, and if the guys at Heinnie use it themselves with all the stock they have access to...............well enough said.

Light utility knifeReview by

This knife has numerous reviews and so I'll just cover my impressions of the knife. Firstly the f1 was much smaller and lighter than i expected, it has a tool like utility feel to it, which I like very much, I have other larger heavier knives, but I prefer the balance of this blade, less tiring to use for most tasks.
I done fire wood processing with the f1 and found it up to the task, but it is my main choice for game preparation, the convex grind suits meat prep, and you can choke right up on the blade for fine tasks.
I have sharpened this knife using the mouse mat and sand paper method, this does minimal damage to the black coating. My knife came shaving sharp and has retained its edge fine.
Finally the knife is easy to carry and looks sensible and so less likely to attract attention.
My f1 is my first choice of knife in almost any situation.

I have owned and extensively used this knife now for well over a year and I can safely say that the F1 is the ultimate bushcraft/ survival knife - second only to the S1. Why? Because in my opinion (and I own and use both) the S1 has the edge over the F1 as a true all-rounder. The F1 is perfect in every way, but chopping, battoning, prying and drilling (which the F1 can do) is easier with the S1, which is slightly bigger and thicker. Yet, the S1 still does everything the F1 does; perhaps even slightly better. I'd happily, and without second thoughts, take the F1 into the woods with me as my only knife, confident of its reliability and performance. However, given the choice in this case between the F1 and the S1, I'd take the S1. Having said all that, though, if you're looking for a no-nonsense, functional, extremely well made and reliable bushcraft/ survival knife, you will NOT find anything better. Period. Another tip: If you don't mind taking more than one knife with you, get the F1 and the A1 together, and you will have the ultimate knife set-up. They compliment each other perfectly, and there won't be a single task out there known to man that you wouldn't be able to do. (Posted on )

Has performed really well in the few months I've had it - with a zytel sheath. And should have bought this instead of a hand made knife (which is now 3 years old and cost £150 when I bought it , and is carbon tool steel). As someone has already commented - if you're going to spend over a £100 on a knife - buy this one! Great service from HH as always. (Posted on )

Superb knife. Extremely solid build, massive 5mm thick blade. Great for everything but carving. The convex grind is easy to sharpen too. Unless you have to have a Scandi grind blade, this is a no brainer, unless of course you prefer the different handle option. Having said that, I've always found this handle to be comfortable and secure. (Posted on )

I had previously received the SAN MAI MASTER HUNTER,which i really ,really liked, and i mean everything about it... Unfortunately it was sent back to a problem with the sheath,so i shall wait for the sheath issue to be addressed and get it again in CPM 3V. Any way i went ordering this to replace the cold steel. It is smaller, but does look a bit classier, handle is bit smaller but still feels comfy and grips well. Blade came very sharp,i stropped it and soon became very, very sharp. I had the leather sheath which is ok but have ordered the zytel as well.. i don't honestly know which of these two knives i prefer,ok the cold steel had to go back but i soon ordered another, and the F1 would probably work harder for its keep. Both similar knives, for similar uses and similar prices,so..if you can't make your mind up..GET BOTH !!! I'm sure you d love either..THANX H.H (Posted on )

Its reputation is well deserved. Extremely well finished and fitted. Strong, sharp out of the box, good handle and blade size.

Just pure quality, a lot of research has gone into it and it shows.

Why 4 stars and not 5? Its hard to bond to it, its purely a tool and doesn't bring much joy to hold other than its absolutely perfect at what it does, sounds a bit ethereal of an explanation but when u have it in hand you understand.

Would i stack my life on it? Yes no doubt.

Had this for a little while now and it has replaced my beloved Ka-Bar as my preferred bush knife, which is probably enough said about the quality and usefulness of this knife, given my loyalty to my old knife.

I am still not 100% convinced of the convex grind to the blade but the knife is razor sharp out of the box and seems to retain its edge pretty well. I'll have to wait and see how easy it is the sharpen when it finally needs it.

I chose the leather sheath as rain isn't a major concern where I come from and it holds the knife securely, as well as looking great.

All in all, this is a great all round bush knife.

Service excellent as always from HH.

For its price it's hard to beat as an all rounder. Despite being convex, I've not had any problem sharpening it, though it's certainly a micro bevel by now. Light enough not to be a burden but sufficiently strong for battoning without fear of damage. Certainly my most used knife, both for bush craft, food preparation and field dressing. If you get one you won't regret it. (Posted on )

I looked at these knives sometime ago when trying to decide on a bushcraft as I read many reviews on how good they were, but me being me, I opted for a rather expensive hand made Timberwolf knife but After I received this found its scales did not match up (either with grain and fitting!) and one scale had filler in it of a non matching colour, and on a knife costing nearly ú200!
Anyway, decided to buy an F1 and I am so glad I did! Knife is extremely well made and of flawless quality, it was also very, very sharp out of the box...Well chuffed with my purchase and the service from HH.
Oh, the handles nice looking too, LOL!

I bought this about a month back in an effort to rationalise the stupid amount of sharps I tended to carry.
I assumed that a lot of its rep would be hype or by collectors who don't necessarily use it hard, but I had never owned a Fallky so for the relatively modest price I took the plunge.

My sharpest knife and the one by which I judge all others blades is my Barkriver Gameskeeper, this thing is scarily sharp, it will literally cut an individual hair in half, nothing ever gets close, well it now has a rival. After a session on a Strop the f1 is just about edging the barky out of its top spot, basically if you touch the edge you are going to bleed!

The zytel sheath is at first glance a bit underwhelming and the webbing is rather poor, I cut mine off and replaced it with leather which to my mind is a lot nicer and now I am very happy with the sheath finding it's slimness and light weight a revelation.
Put your doubts away and your hand in your pocket..... BUY IT

I have had this blade, bought from Heinnie, for 5 years now and thought I would review it.
There is really not a lot to say that has not been said already about how wonderful this knife is. I have continuously used and abused this knife (including digging through earth with stones in and cutting other metals like food cans and tins) and every time, a quick sharpen and it is ready as new, with perhaps a few scuff marks! I even use it in the kitchen often although the back of the blade is a bit thick for carving.
Others have mentioned chipping of the edge but I not seen this, perhaps I am lucky, especially considering the abuse I have heaped upon it.
Best all round knife I have ever owned.

I have read the other comments in regards to the blade chipping issues etc but have not experienced this my self.

I use this knife for everything from general camp chores such as wood preparation (including the heavier stuff) to preparing game.

I went for the satin finish as was under no doubt I would wear the black off in no time given how I intended to use the blade. It is a very nice looking knife with a well fitting handle that does not slip even when wet.

The zytel sheath is fantastic with a good lock home and thumb press for easy release. Especially good for us lefties as you have the option of a true lefthand sheath.

If you are a hunter and especially into deerstalking then this knife and sheath combo is great as it meets all the requirements and avoids the issues you would have with leather for example.

All in all I love this knife and its ability to retain its edge with little work from the DC4 and highly recommend it.

As per usual service from HH was awesome

Got this though the door today after a bit of skepticism about so many reviews of them chipping, but this wasn't even my issue, mine was the fit and finishing.

Where the choil has been cut out, one side is full of scratches where it's not been polished off (or were the scratches are too deep to have been polished, either or) and where the blade begins to convex is wildly inconsistent.

I suppose if you don't care or expect much then you might not be disappointed (however im still yet to see if the thing chips or not) But compared to the other F1 in this house (which is very well finished) I just can't see how the price has gone up so much over the years and the quality control has gone so down hill...

Update to my last review:

Firstly I'd like to thank HH who responded to my last review before the ink had even dried on it, offering to send it back to Fallkniven for a re-grind.

I declined however, as after a bit of Internet searching I found a number of instances of the new 'factory' edge chipping. Now, just to clarify, this 'chipping' is very slight & not a structural issue. The universal advice from forums was to go through the process of re-sharpening a few times & then see how it held up, as this seemed to bring a much stronger 'edge'. So, I have used & used this knife & re-sharpened twice & I have to say it seems to be fine!

There's no denying how good this blade is & I'm finally confident that it will hold the edge & not chip again under normal use.

I have given 4 *s purely for the fact that as chipping is a well documented problem on forums, a little advice from the manufacturer on this would have given me the confidence to not worry in the first place.

A Good KnifeReview by
I got the F1 because of the praise they receive. I did searches on Forums & YouTube etc & all were positive.

I ordered satin as I have a lot of Beckers/CRKT's in black & was after a less 'aggressive' blade, but one that still does the job.

I don't tend to chop using a knife as the Laplander is better equipped, but I do baton as part of fire prep. I haven't batoned with the F1 as yet because..... and this is where the review bit starts:

The blade is chipped already. I have made feather sticks & that's it. It was pristine when I got it so it's not pre-purchase damage. I can only imagine there's a manufacturing flaw in this blade. Obviously it's impossible to prove light use on my behalf, so I'll endeavour to renew the edge & perhaps do a follow up review.

As an all round blade it ticks all the boxes, but I can't say I'm not disappointed.

There are too many positive reviews of this blade for it to be deemed a bad buy & I hope that others don't have this issue.

This knife is tough, really tough. It is a tool you can rely on. I have owned mine for well over 5 years and it is still the knife which comes out with me the most. The edge of the blade is easy to maintain at hair popping sharpness with the DC4 stone. This knife had been used in many ways, carving, general utility, game preparation, battening through timber to split it, hammering it in to a wooden block to allow me to cut a leather bootlace. It has taken it all and comes back for more.
I initially had the black leather sheath with the popper closure. I didn't get on with it so bought a custom dangler from a leatherworker.
It is the most effective blade back for use with a fire rod I have ever seen.
My advice is that if you are thinking of a do it all knife which is dependable and super strong buy one without hesitation.

I have waited a year to review; and it is easy to maintain a convex edge in domestic surroundings. It is a tough knife, and very handsome too. Still cuts through rabbit and pheasant with ease, and handles wood.

But actually I tend still to head off on my serious walking with a Spyderco Pacific Salt in my pocket, because it lasts better on Bleaklow, and does the jobs required. And for not playing survival the Salt is perfectly up to the jobs required of an everyday knife in wild country beyond the normal ken.

So this one is a problem in that it can rust , and is rather obvious as a carry . But it's only real advantage is that it stays sharp longer after cutting wood .

I should say that when in the woods I would have at least a saw with me , and probably access to an axe . The 'only survival knife ' scenario is to me rather ingenuous as I couldn't carry a knife onto a plane nowadays anyway ; and in all other circumstances I hope I would have brought the right stuff.

Not much to add to all the other comments. This is a good knife, why then do Fallkniven only provide a two year warranty? Do they not have confidence in them? Compare to Esse R 3. I was looking for something to sharpen kitchen knives. This is how I found the F1 and heinne.com. The knife looked very versatile and the reviews are generally good so I decided to get one. Shortly after I moved house and all my kitchen stuff was in storage while I was looking for a new place to live. The only knife I had for about 6 months was the Fallkniven. It was and is superb. I used it for everthing from preparing food in the kitchen (even as a bread knife) to splitting wood for the fire (my axe was in storage too). It is still the knife I use most in the kitchen - desite being a bit thick.

Once you get used to sharpening it on a leather strop it really works and is actually quite enjoyable to do - plenty of videos on you tube showing you how to do this.

I liked the F1 so much I bought a U2 as well, and that is just as good in it's own way. No more intimidaing than a swiss army knife, but easier to clean and with a nicer shaped and better quality blade.

It won't absorb water(unlike the Leather)but will drain it, has a couple of holes for a leg strap or cable-tying upside down to webbing/vest. Fantastic outdoors knifeReview by

This is a simply fantastic outdoors and general purpose knife. Ridiculously solid blade due to its lamination and full tang design. Edge is harder to resharpen than other blade profiles but it holds its edge so well this is rarely needed. Only negative is the handle could be more comfortable but for the money you will be very pushed to find a knife better and in my opinion it is the best outdoors knife out there (better handle versions are available for a cost, and they have a bigger tang) (Posted on )

The F1 can support my weight (79kg) littel flex. If you are worried about sharpening the F1's convex edge: The blade profile is not that convex it resembles almost a flatgrinded blade and can be sharpened just like a flatgrinded profile. The F1 blade is up to 27mm wide. Many people dislike the zytel sheaths. I like them in having a 2x retention system: the snap and a "dimmer" holding on the guard. Pretty secure sheats but not pretty but neutral. The weight is 50g for the F1 zytel sheath.

Bought this for use on the boat - quick rope cutting saves fingers trapped in winches. Cuts through 16mm rope as if it wasn't there, no saing action required, just swipe. Anything else feels like a toy in comparison (Posted on )

I put off buying an F1 for ages but finally got one and took it on a bushcraft weekend on a friends land. This knife is perfect for everything I needed it for and works great on a firesteel. If your after a tough bushcraft/survival knife this is it. Highly recommended (Posted on )

Quality of fit & finish is stunning. Great value, significant upgrade from e.g. Frost Mora. Sharpest out of the box of any I own (MOD, Spyderco, Emerson, Benchmade). Great balance (biased to handle) & grip. Full tang construction feels bombproof. Only but: Zytel & full leather sheath not ambidextrous. You won't be disappointed. One to keep forever. (Posted on )

Initially bought this as a back up knife for my S1, but it is easily good enough as a main knife, exellent blade profile, natural feeling handle with confident grip, wouldn't venture out without it now, it really is a well thought out knife, if you only buy one knife, and may have to rely on it someday, you will not go wrong with the F1. The F1 takes a good edge , this is one tough knife. Big enough for the heavy duty in the woods , and small enough for those firesticks. (Posted on )

Excellent tool. Thick strong blade, sharp as you like. Good cutting foliage, rope, and preparing food. Also sparks unbelievably well using a fire steel, lighting all tinders including disposable BBQs. Also very light with solid sheath. Only improvement could be a sheath that mounts more flexibly like the old kydex sheaths, the zytel one has to slide on to a belt. (Posted on )

Can the shearh be modified to be worn horizantaly on the belt?
A:
It wouldn't be an easy conversion you would have to attache a Tek lok to the sheath and if using their hard ware it can be tricky to get the receivers in position. Not impossible just very fiddly.

Not sure whether to order with the leather sheath - if you are not supposed to store the knife in a leather sheath what is the alternative? Buy both??
A:
Lots of people have both sheaths as leather is traditional and the zytel is weather proof. It is not advised to store in sheath unless heavily oiled as leather retains moisture and you don't want that next to this blade.

Do you find there is a strange smell from the knife
A:
I haven't had any comments about smell before, they do have a thin layer of a protector on them / oil and the quality of leather may give of a slight aromour but nothing unusual
