This is a tiny version of a simple Japanese design, a simple folder with a folded metal handle, non-locking blade and a simple extended tang to open it. The Higonokami style is a friction folder, with no lock, held open by the user’s hand acting on the tang.

One will appreciate the simplicity of the sparse, Nagao design – there’s nothing on this knife that’s surplus to requirements. The handle is of folded brass. The blade pivots around a rivet, spaced with a pair of plain brass washers.

The blade is from Japanese SK steel, a good, straightforward material for blademaking.

The knifemaker’s ability is evident in this pure and simple design. This version has a satin stainless steel handle with a satin finish tanto blade.

    Higonomaki mini

Posted by Jonathon T on 12th Mar 2024

Pretty little knife with a strong blade and a sharp point. Stiff enough to open securely but loose enough to open easily. Surprisingly tricky to sharpen to a satisfying edge, but I got there eventually. Looks good with a little homemade lanyard

Very small and easily usable with quality materials, sharpened on a diamond plate and shaves hair with no effort

    Higonokami Mini

Posted by Toby on 7th Sep 2021

These are miniscule, but very useful and easy to carry. The build quality is similar to other Nagao Higonokami - that is, rustic but with a lot of character. I'm deducting 1 star because it required quite a bit of work to get it up to acceptable sharpness. Would buy again.

    Lovely!

Posted by Felly Da! on 5th May 2021

I've recentlly fallen for the Hignokami so wantedd to try a few out .. This is a dinky knife .. It's a smidge shorter than a Victorinox Classic SD, closed, while the blade is a couple of mil longer. Mine came nicely sharpend and remains closed or open very well. Utility wise i let you decide what can be done with a tool of this size. Fit and finish are very nice here. It's small and quite a beautiful thing. Very happy with my buy. Thank you!

    A Marmite knife

Posted by If it's not industrial it's broken on 13th Nov 2018

Delivered next day. This is a very small knife, Old school penknife simple and very unuseual in its design, angle of the blade grind is very agresive, sharp enough for odd jobs. but not going to use it for any serious work the brass is to soft and would bend and loosen. Marmite knife, and I love Marmite. 4.5 stars for sheer interesting remaing star for the buiety of the brass bodywork

    What a charming wee knife

Posted by Richard on 7th Nov 2017

This is small - seriously tiny, it's the size of a large paperclip when folded and the blade is about 44mm long (the diameter of my Elliot Brown Canford Watch- wearing today). It's rough and ready but has obviously been handmade. the hole in the tang (chikiti) is screaming to be filled with a leather neck thong and it's a jeans watch pocket or neck knife extraordinaire. A bit different - no fancy cnc here, this has been built by a craftsman and the blade is a thing of pre industrial wonder. If you don't fancy a larger Higonokami but would like an example of this soon-to-be-lost-for-ever Japanese knife making art then this is ideal - a cracking wee stocking filler and ideal for peeling apples, sharpening pencils, opening boxes etc.

    Lovely little thing

Posted by Bob on 3rd Jun 2015

At first I was shocked, when they say hand made they really mean it! You can see the hammer marks on the tang and the pivot rivet. After a world of machine stamped and robot assembled identikit products, this little thing has a real charm. The blade looks to be some sort of high carbon steel, it will rust if you don't look after it but it holds a razor edge and is easy to sharpen with an oil stone. The mechanism is as simple as it gets, easy and reliable, keep your thumb on the tang and it won't fold up you. A little online research says the only thing that might be needed in future years is to peen the rivet a little if the blade becomes sloppy. Be prepared for the size of this knife, it is truly tiny. I love it, I'll be ordering some of the other models of this knife.
