One cut thumb, fair to say the back spring isn't too beefy, but that's to be expected. Nice little piece for the collection. (Posted on )

Love this little knife, really well made, bought it as it reminded me of a knife my Grandad used. Sharp out of the box, and also great service by HH, overnight delivery. (Posted on )

I wasn’t expecting much for £12 and I was blown away when I opened the box, it’s £12 of perfect, both blades are sharp, the main blade is shaving sharp and both are well centred when closed, there’s no overhang on the scales everything is flush.

The small blade almost covers the nail nick on the big blade but I haven’t found it a problem as you can still get your nail in the nick and the blade has just the right amount of resistance

My one has small black flakes on one side of the scales which adds to its character

Did I mention it was £12!

Amazing delivery from HH crazy fast, I’m going to order a couple of bacon rolls in with my next order, they’ll still be hot when they arrive!

I do not carry this knife everyday. Everyday I carry a BM Proper (see my reviews) but I do like this knife, perhaps more than I should. I love the scales in plain bone and the absence of scribbling on the blade. Above all I love RR Barlow’s smooth format both in the hand and pocket; though why they cannot take full advantage of the UK law fully I don't know.

I like to think of this knife as my throw down knife - the knife I carry - and I always carry one - when I am unsure of the response I might get. So in a tourist situation recently I took this knife as my lunch knife because it is so small, old fashioned and inoffensive. If someone in authority said ‘hand it over,’ the principle would burn, but not my wallet. In short you're not going to terrify anyone or disturb the horses with this one.

It is well made, though that is not consistently the case with RR and it comes sharp though it will take a superb edge. For the fun of it I put it through its paces: a bit of whittling and daily carry and it lasted three days before the blades started to wobble. This I fixed with a peening hammer and some polish and it is now back as good as new.

For the price of a round of beers it compares favourably in terms of build quality with both a Buck and a Case I bought recently.

The tradition of the cheaply priced traditional folder is alive and well with the RR Barlow. It has its limitations and is modest in size but it will do good work.

Orderd at 3:00 pm even had a couple of issues with my address which HH sorted without a problem and still recived first thing next morning unreal thank you so much guys ,
Love the knife couple of very small issues if I were to be very picky large blade doesn't centre right and the handle has some sharp edges but hey it was £12 So I can let that lie , also agree with another review if I were to buy this in my hometown of sheffield I would be paying so much more for the same quality , won't be my last barlow as love the history behind them , great knife and AWSOME service guys cheers

  7. Great Barlow Review by

When I was 8 years old my Dad allowed me to pick my first real pocket knife. I chose an Imperial Barlow, made in Providence, Rhode Island, USA. It was a cheap "shell knife;" the long bolsters were really just thin sheet metal, and the scales were hollow brown plastic. But I loved it, and it accompanied me on many a boyhood adventure. Long gone now.

I never could find another Barlow that I liked as well. Even the Imperial Barlows made later on in Ireland just weren't the same, somehow. Case's Barlow, although very nicely made, is, to me, not as convenient, since the pen blade is accessed by turning the knife over. Just not my preference. GEC makes a 3" beauty of a small Barlow, an expensive little gem that all but dislocates my thumbnail due to the stout backsprings. The Boker Barlow I tried (not from HH, I hasten to add,) had soft back springs, poor alignment on the pen blade, arrived shockingly dull, and stained my hand after a few minutes of wood carving, as the dye transferred to my skin. I was disappointed, considering Boker's fine reputation. Perhaps I got a second. Taylor's Eyewitness Barlows perform beautifully thanks to genuine Sheffield steel. Phenomenal cutters and carvers, but unless you pay much more for their higher end examples, I find them to be tough and serviceable, but just a bit crude. Then I tried Rough Rider.

This white bone Barlow is one of the nicest I've ever had, of any brand. It makes for a very good whittler. If you like the inherent robust quality of the tried and true Barlow pattern, but have been put off by the weight in your pocket, Rough Rider seem to have picked a size that, while reassuringly hefty, within a couple grams of a Vic Farmer, still carries very comfortably, thanks to the compact length and beautifully rounded contours. Pocket friendly, I'll say!

Fit and finish, walk and talk, edge retention and corrosion resistance are all excellent. Their 440A stainless is a good all rounder and the perfect choice for a novice or for the experienced knife user who wants an inexpensive yet quality, low maintenance, pocket knife with a traditionalist pedigree.

The bone scales have a few dark flecks on mine. But remember that bone is a natural material, with small imperfections the norm. In fact my favourite Case Peanut broke off a small flake of its bone handle right at the mid-spring pin soon after I bought it. Annoying at first, but such is life, and the Peanut is, years later, soldiering on, the tiny chip mellowed by time and much use. Bone is durable, however, and Rough Rider's White Bone Barlow perfectly captures all the old world charm and naturally ergonomic comfort that has made the Barlow pattern such an enduring classic.

HH, as always, super to deal with.

Can I just start with a quick note on HH service? Ordered at 16:40, confirmation of dispatch email received by 17:00 and delivery by next day. I am staggered! Thanks Guys!

Loved the look of Barlow's for a bit (and own a Taylor's Eye Brand "Castrator") but thought they'd be too bulky. I ordered this RR to bulk-out an order containing my son's new camping knife.

I am so chuffed to be proved wrong. This Barlow is comfy in the hand, not noticeable in "that little jeans pocket" and the sharpness, look and build quality, as usual with Rough Rider, belie the price!

    Don't um and ah, buy.

If you're thinking about getting one of these amazing little knives then my advice would be to quit thinking and start typing in your payment details.

£11.95 for such a handsome, good quality pocket knife is incredible value for money.

First time owning a barlow pattern and I'm loving it.

RR knife no.7, gets 5 stars for the absolute value for money it is.
Fits in the hand nicely, large and small blades cover lots of uses. Sharp but gave them a touch up. Fit and finish, stay and play all good.
The white bone scales give it a classic look, pity the ss blades won't take on a patina.
Next day delivery with standard p&p, excellent service as usual.

  13. A Little Beauty and a Piece of HistoryReview by
    Rating
I love Barlow knives, both the pattern and the fact that little has changed about them since about 1670. It is the classic pocket knife and this one adheres to the pattern faithfully. I have a few Rough Rider knives and they have all been exceptional considering their price point. This is no different and in quality it is on a par with other knives I have at over 4 times the price.
The white bone handle is what the original Barlow was manufactured with and this has an additional second, smaller spear point, blade. The main blade is the classic drop point which annoyingly had writing on which is relatively easy to polish off. The steel is 440 - a reasonable choice considering the price.
The finish is exceptional. Perfectly centred blades, brass liners, nickel steel bolsters and seamlessly fitted handles. The knife is smaller than you think but easily makes the mark as a UK legal slip joint. It's old fashioned look won't have you arrested when you use it to slice your apple either, and it's a perfect size for the small pocket in a pair of jeans.
The only down side as others have mentioned is the small blade obscures the nail nick on the large blade. Such an obvious mistake they must have combined two blades from other models and not bothered to re tool the side of the nail nick. A pity because otherwise this is an exceptional knife, and a piece of history. Anyone who has read Mark Twain will probably know the references in Tom Sawyer. At £9.95 this is my bargain of the year so far.
Delivery so fast I think they posted it when I thought about ordering it...

Usual service from HH ordered on friday turned up first thing Saturday unreal!! lol.
Knife was slightly smaller than expected but build quality was better than expected so bonus there. Main blade was quite sharp out the box but the smaller blade was very very dull hence the 4 stars not 5. Spent some time tweaking both blades and they are now both shaving sharp! Overall very nice unassuming pocket knife which I will be using for sure.Well worth the money IMO.

  15. Two cut thumbsReview by

Lovely knife very sharp otb but, have cut both thumbs trying to open large blade because both nail grooves are on same side and my nails are quite soft.
Will have to grind small blade to allow my nail to get into the groove on the large blade. So saying it will be worth it for such a lovely knife.

I now own 6 Rough Riders and this is my favurite to date. It's an ideal siz and the finish is superb. The main blade is only slightly off center but when you factor in the cost it's forgiveable. There are also no obvious gaps in the liners. I love this knife. (Posted on )

I got this a few weeks back ,super fast HH delivery as usual, ive had a few RR and they have all been super for the money, but this one is even better, bone is lovely, fit n finnish is spot on and solid, nice snap, all in all a sweet barlow. (Posted on )

Good fit and finish with no gaps, sharp edges or swarf; (better than some costing 3 times as much).
The back springs are stronger than an SAK but not as strong as the two Arthur Wright knives I have. A strong thumb nail is required for opening. Blades are secure with no play when open.
Cutting edges are 39mm and 56mm. Supplied boxed.

  22. Excellent Review by
    Rating
Got my 2 knives from HH (Barlow/Trapper) in what seems to be the best delivery on the net. This knife is really well built and weighty and feels like quality before you open it. The only thing RR could improve on is to put the nail opening for the blades on opposite sides of the blades, as the small partly obscures the larger one. I still gave it 5 stars as the build quality is so good

Fit and finish for the money is amazing, it locks up with no play in the blades, is sharp out the box and the only improvement I did was to run a 3000grit stone over the factory edge of the blades to remove the lines in the course grind.

If this came out of Sheffield it would be 5 x the money, and it makes my mates Sheffield Lambs foot build quality look bad. My mates are jealous and will be adding one to their collection
