Schrade Frontier 37 Micarta

Schrade Frontier 37 Micarta

The Schrade F36M and F37M fixed blades are two well priced, very solid knives. They both feature striking black and white micarta-style handle scales, bolted strongly to the full tang handle with sturdy hex-bolts. The F36 is a smaller version of the F37.

The drop point blade is black-coated 8Cr13MoV stainless and the feature which stands out when this blade is in the hand is the sheer weight of the knife. The steel is a good 5mm thick from front of the blade right through to the lanyard hole in the handle. One feels that this is not a tool to let you down.

In both F36 and F37, the top of the handle is heavily knurled on the metal, but not the micarta of the handle, allowing good, strong purchase to be applied to the task at hand. The same knurling is present beneath the handle.

The knife is supplied with a basic nylon non-MOLLE sheath with a 5cm belt loop, and securing lace. A good bit of kit for the money.

  1. Budget Bushcraft Beast!Review by
Got this knife a few weeks ago and was blown away by Heinnie Haynes's blistering delivery speed and award-worthy customer service via email, so infinite thanks to them and I'll definitely be a returning customer!

Firstly this knife is a weighty powerhouse; it's well balanced and very comfortable to hold in the hand in a variety of positions if you work with the grooves of the handles, and perhaps with a little bit of filing down on the middle "bump". It came shaving sharp with a slight but still razor sharp burr towards the tip that was easily remedied with the accompanying sharpener that holds it's own for touch-ups (although I will soon replace with a Smith's Pocket Pal sharpener). The coating is a quite rough textured matte finish that hasn't yet come off even after some fairly heavy use, instead smoothing out on sides where frequent contact with wood occurred. The sheath gets a bad reputation but it holds the knife very well and is built quite tough (the material can fray but running a lighter over them sorts it instantly), the only things missing I'd say is the option for MOLLE attachment and a removable front pouch; like the sheath for the Extreme Survival F1 has for example.

On a recent camping trip it was used extensively for chopping a couple of 4-5" diameter trees - doing so in a matter of 3-4 minutes - with little effort put into the swing as the knife really does bite in and do all the work for you. It also chops smaller branches off in no time and batons well (if you're strong enough, I personally am not really so don't baton it much), as well as striking the accompanying firesteel brilliantly, although one thing I'd recommend is using the finger choil to throw the sparks in a flat spread onto your tinder. The choil is great for finer work and was used to create notches in wood to create a small windbreak, that can be seen (as well as a few other pictures of the size of logs batonned [some seen were sawn] for firewood) in this gallery, ***********
The only real negatives I found on this knife are the aggressive jimping/finger grooves and that it wanted to fly out of my hand when chopping. The jimping caused a couple of nasty blisters on my thumb and index finger when chopping, so use with thick gloves or look into grinding them down to a more comfortable level. The slipping from my hand obviously could be fixed with getting a better grip of the handle or using thick gloves, but this goes hand in hand with the aggressive jimping, so a lanyard is also a good idea for added safety and also for more efficient chopping.
Hope this review was of use, and again thanks to HH for their admirable customer service!

  2. Great service - unsure about knifeReview by
First time user of Heinnie - wow great service from start to finish.
The knife, so far is a bit rough round the edges, slight bend in the blade and not as sharp as some reviews made out.
The jimmping on the handle is really tough and I have had to file it down manually to hold it. really rough, so be aware.
Not sure about the black covering on the entire blade - will probably remove it.
Not really tested it yet so only judging on the initial feel - it does improve after your initial first impression - so don't be put off.

  3. Superb blade and serviceReview by
Rang last Monday orderd both the stainless and the carbon version, told my order would be sent seperatley as they are waiting the carbon versions. Only charged me for the stainless and arrived within 24 hrs. Nothing wrong with the angles on mine, razor sharp out of box, good fit and finish, super strong. Cant wait to get the 1095 one. Thank you HH superb service (Posted on )
  4. Quality issuesReview by
As always Heinnie Haynes' service was top. Unfortunately, the both SCHF37M I got were not. My first copy was bent and slightly twisted/torqued. On my second copy snapped the tip after 3-4 times stabbing the blade not very powerful into a tree (have not really put any lateral force on it). I think, the problem is the hollow grind which goes at the tip all the way up to the spine and makes the tip quite delicate. I have regrind the tip to a shape like on the Kizylar Maximus and hopefully have now a strong and durable tip.
My second grief is with the 8Cr13MoV stainless steel on the SCHF37M (and probably Schrade's heat-treating), because it is not possible to put an edge lower than 50° on it. Although there is no point putting a 40° or smaller edge on such a thick blade, it is also not possible to go down to 45° on my copy, because the edge rolls as soon as the edge angle is below 50°. The only way to put a sharp edge back on this knife after reshaping the tip and stripping the coating was to use the Work Sharp with the 50° guide and then leather strop it to its final sharpness.
If you can live without the finger choil and don't mind a recurved blade then the SCHF10 or SCHF26 are maybe better options (or the original: Survive! GSO-7/7).

  5. OutstandingReview by
Sharp as a razor out of the box. terrific piece of kit with an outstanding build quality for the price. Don't miss the chance to own one of these fine knives. Won't bother commenting on HH delivery service. It was as blisteringly good as it always is. (Posted on )
