Spyderco Bug

Spyderco Bug

£15.95

Description

The Spyderco Bug is one of the UK's best selling non-locking folding knives - and it's tiny.

Aerodynamically the bumble bee shouldn't be able to fly but someone forgot to tell the bee. The flight of the bumble bee defies both nature and one’s expectations that something that small can perform such a grand maneuver. Like bumblebees, Spyderco Bugs perform unexpectedly. The Bug, not much larger than a bee, is the latest addition. Spyderco's SLIPITS are non-locking slip- joint knives. They have no locking mechanism holding the blade open, relying instead on resistant pressure at the pivot area when the blade is extended and being used. Bugs are part of the SLIPIT group and thus UK friendly carry.

The flat ground blade is 3Cr13MoV stainless steel available with a PlainEdge. The Bug’s handle offers a flat surface for a small amount of engraving or embellishment and can be customized for use as jewelry or a gift item. Positioned on the end of the handle is a lanyard hole large enough to thread with a chain and be worn around the neck or slipped onto a key chain. The Bug is the smallest folder in the Spyderco lineup.

  1. Great little knife Review by

Love this knife, solid feel, good opening mechanism and sharp blade.
Great for anyone’s collection. For me it’s more of a novelty item rather than a practical tool but still a fantastic knife. As always top class service from Heinnie.

  2. Little charmer...Review by
    Rating
So many reviews endorse this tiny slipjoint. After buying one it is easy to understand why. It is well made, with a lively snap and very positive engagement. Alright, it’s not really big enough for food prep, but all the other day to day tasks of a little pocket knife are well within its ability.

Small but well formed, the Bug is every bit as charming in person as its admirers claim. I feel it is as tiny as I would like to go in terms of functionality and ergonomics. Right at the cusp of usefulness versus ornamentation.

The fit and finish is very good. The symmetry of the grinds is well done. Placing it next to a UKPK brings an amused smile. Needless to say it all but disappears in a pocket. And that is the only cautionary thought that comes to mind. It would be easy to forget the whereabouts of this diminutive but very useful little gem. But overall, yes, a welcome addition to any collection.

Wonderful service and delivery from HH, as ever.

This is a truly tiny little blade but it performs surprisingly well. Nice option for a tiny keychain knife and makes a neat little gift for the uninitiated. (Posted on )
  4. A practical novelty!Review by
    Rating
I bought this little fella as a novelty for my keychain. I was surprised to find out how functional it really is.

First, look at the picture. Realise the two indents in the scales? They're for your first two fingers. They're that tiny. Seriously, it's unreal.

I only wanted it to be able to boast that I have a legit Spyderco on me at all times, but I've found myself using this thing all the time at work to open letters and packages. People just kept borrowing my UKPK that was my EDC, to the point I began bringing a second EDC with me that also g ot borrowed nonstop. Now it's just a given that my two real knives get lent to people sometime in the morning and I spend the rest of the day using hte Bug. And I'm fine with it.

Yes, it's China-made, but we all know that's no longer the mark of shame it once was in the knife world. This thing came razor-sharp out of the box and has kept a remarkable edge, even when it's been used to sharpen pencils (I own a pencil sharpener, but let's be honest, it's far cooler to do it with a knife). It feels very solidly constructed even though it looks like it fell out of a Christmas cracker.

Heck, I even got a laugh when a security guard at one of our offices had to do a routine checklist including declaring if we were carrying any weapons. I pulled out the Bug and instantly made a new friend with the jokes that commenced.

Overall, I can't recommend this enough. Yes, it's an amusing novelty, but it's also a legit great tiny knife that I've been able to use as a backup when my EDC gets borrowed for several hours. They used to be cheaper but £15 is about the upper limit of what I'd be willing to pay. If Spyderco increase the price again I may knock off a star, but for now it's a solid easy 5.

HH provide quick reliable service and have superb loyalty to their customers. The Bug, very small but a nice strong back spring, razor sharp OTB and a great 2 finger and thumb hold gives you good purchase if you had to use her. 2 handed opening means you won’t surprise anyone f*king it open and although the blade shapes a little aggressive the blades so small nobody will probably even know you have a knife. Great purchase very pleased with it. (Posted on )
  6. Floppy bladeReview by
    Rating
The blade of mine now flops open of its own accord, making it troublesome to have in a trouser pocket. Tried to fix it, but can't. It's had minimal use over some three years - so quite why the "lock" has failed so is puzzling. But it was nice while it lasted! (Posted on )

1st purchase from Heinnie and can only echo what everybody else has said. Fantastic service and fast.
The bug is tiny. I read the specs and reviews but a 3.3 cm blade really is tiny. It is a serious knife though feels solidly built and is sharp straight from the tiny Spyderco box. It is on my keyring and will go everywhere with me. It is totally inoffensive but is up to most of the jobs I am likely to encounter.

This is probably the one bit of must-have kit for the ordinary 21st century human. There is just no reason not to have one of these on your key-ring, unless you're about to board an aircraft. Though I usually have a bigger, UK-legal knife on my person as well, this is fantastic for small everyday tasks without freaking out your work colleagues, as well as being lovely for more delicate, craft knife style work. Top bit of gear. (Posted on )

What a great little tool, It may be small but it is not a toy!
Razor sharp out of the box, looks great on a keyring and very handy too.
My partner payed for this lovely little knife for me yesterday as a prezzie at about 1.30pm and it was at my door today at about 2.30pm. I don't know how you do it HH but thank you.
Would recommend to anyone thinking about getting one of these little Spyderco Bug knives just go for it. It's worth every penny and very well made, now got my eye on the next two sizes up.

    Rating
I bought three of these a while ago and all three have been lost. No problem, I will get a new one, or so I thought. But the price has tripled. This Chinese micro-knife is not in the same league as an Alox Victorinox SD but now costs nearly as much, nor is Chinese exchange rate, labour cost etc comparable with the Western equivalent.
Having said that, they sit invisibly on a key ring , are well-made and sharp. They are pleasing to handle and capable, real knives for light tasks.
But fifteen quid? Not a chance. It was a pleasing buy at Five Ninety-Nine but now Spyderco are just being silly.

I bought one of these, lost it, went to buy another but the price had gone up quite a bit, had a moan (see below), then found it again!

Such a little joy, I keep it in my wallet and use it more than any other knife, for cutting string, opening boxes, cleaning my nails, slicing orange peel ....

If I lost it again I'd buy another in a flash, the price is so worth it.

Really functional design, superb quality, sharp and despite its size very very useful.

First, the product. As others have said, it really is tiny, 40 mm from end to end. But bloody sharp. Will service as a very useful 'put it in the pocket and forget about it until you need it' tool.

Secondly, Heinnie Haynes service. This poses a a conundrum. Why is it that Heinnie Haynes can consistently despatch orders within minutes, literally minutes of placing the order, and the package arrives first thing next day, yet other companies cannot? A thing of wonder, possibly up there as one of the Wonders of the World, I suspect. Well don HH

  30. Rule No. 9Review by
    Rating
If you abide by the above "Gibbs" rule (Never go anywhere without a knife), as I do, this is a very useful back-up to my EDC SAK. I've had mine for a good while and keep it, with my Photon Microlight II, on my person at all sensible times. It comes with a reasonable edge and will take a better one (if you know how, of course). Keep it lubricated though or it will be difficult to open. (Posted on )
  31. A fantastic little knifeReview by
    Rating
This is a great little knife, though is really is very, very tiny. Perfect to just put in your pocket and forget about until you need it to open a parcel or whatever.

It's good quality, too. I've had mine a month, now, and have encountered no problems whatsoever. Takes and holds a good sharp edge. I've found that putting it on a keyring makes it easier to hold and use.

One thing, though. If you're buying this knife as a present, get one for yourself at the same time. Otherwise, you'll just be placing a second order as soon as you've seen how brilliant this knife is... (I speak from experience here.)

I know what you're thinking this is not the set! Well that's true but seen as it has been discontiuned, this is the only option for reviewing it. First, let me say all three knives come razor sharp out the box and for UK legal slip joint folders there is little or no blade play. All three can and do find a every day use. The Bug makes a great key ring knife either for you or the missus. The Honeybee and Grasshopper both make good pocket knives or for toolbox or survival kits. All in all excellent value for money! 27quid for all three!!! I believe H.H have one set left! Buy it you will not be disappointed. Ordered mine Monday morning arrived Tuesday lunch! You can't get better than Heinnies service! Thanks guys. (Posted on )

For the price you get so much. Razor sharp blade (I sliced myself open with it very badly) and fantastic construction, but it began rusting after a while. However, a light brush of sand paper cleaned that right off. Overall it's pretty good, but very, very
    small, only for keyring purposes.

  45. Not a JokeReview by
    Rating
I showed this to my daughter and she started laughing.

What isn't a joke is the sharpness of the blade. Run it over a strop and you have a scalpel.

I immediately attached it to my keys as I knew I'd loose it in 5 minutes because it's so small.

While it's not a locker, it does have a very tight open position, which is reassuring considering the sharpness of the blade.

Great for opening parcels, fine craft work, sharpening pencils and other small jobs around the house. Probably as small as you can make knife and still have it useful.

This is without doubt the biggest surprise I have ever had.
I wanted a keychain knife that is UK legal... I have a Gerber Artifact which I have modified so it will not lock but wanted something more special. Checked out all the reviews and ordered this little baby but was not prepared for the miniscule size despite all the Youtube reviews and research.
    It is REALLY TINY!
Gorgeous bit of man jewellery but with the edge of a razor, tested it on post it notes and rough newspaper and it cut it like butter. Needed to trim some 550 paracord and it was so easy I had to do it a few times to convince myself that this little beast was actually doing it!
Now it is on a small thin paracord thong and on my keyring alongside my Gerber Shard, Led light and Acme Tornado whistle.
I am so impressed by it that I am giving serious consideration to buying more as zipper pulls for some of my jackets and bags.
    Size does not matter!

At first sight, looks like it came in a Christmas cracker. It's so small, but once you open it, you appreciate the build quality. I have a SOG Micron, but this is so much more solid, and easier to open. Razor sharp OTB, you cannot afford not to have one on your keyring. It slices string, parcel strapping, tie wraps, fingers etc. Bought 2; 1 for keys, 1 for survival tin. This is the smallest practical blade you will ever buy. At this price, it's a no brainer. HH comms and delivery second to none as normal. Deal with these people !!!! (Posted on )

In spite of the photo and reading the spec it is smaller than I thought. Very sharp out of the surprisingly small box. Mine is very tight opening and closing but that might change with use. An excellent little knife, it's discreet enough to use where people may be 'upset' seeing someone with a knife.

I'd seen the reviews saying it's small but wasn't expecting it to be this small, the box it came in is as long as the short side of a credit card, folded the knife is about 1mm shorter than a AAA battery & open it's about as long as a car key.

It's surgically sharp, as sharp if not sharper than some of the disposable scalpels I've used in work.

For less than ?ú7 you can't go wrong.

This is tiny, even compared to most peoples ideas of a 'normal' penknife. Really, really tiny. On the other hand it's sharp and robust enough for day to day use cutting tape or bailing straps on parcels, cutting zip-ties etc. It goes un-noticed in terms of size and weight on your keys, and saves you getting out your regular 'Legal EDC' knife in situations where that might bother people.

I'm not generally a fan of Spyderco knives, but for the money you really can't go wrong with this; I'll definitely be buying a few more of them.

Got this for the wife for her keyring and told her that despite it's cute profile it is a capable cutter. After cutting through an apple with one swipe she has now cut about 20 things and is planning on getting several as prezzie's. Great little key knife and great service. 70. This thing really…Review by
    Rating
This thing really is tiny! Even the 50p for scale in the demo picture doesn't quite prepare you for it.

It comes in a lovely presentation box, and was shaving sharp straight from the factory (I have the bald patches on my arms to prove it!)

The quality is fantastic too, most small knives are flimsy, quite crude in their construction, but the bug has a lovely brushed finish with the laser etched logo. The slipjoint spring on the back of the handle is almost invisible when the knife is closed.

The hole makes it perhaps easier to open than knives with a fingernail notch.

The liner lock doesn't resist blade closure quite as well as the Sog Micron that arrived at the same time but the quality of the Bug definitely seems better!

These bugs are brilliant. I bought two for my keyrings and they are razor-sharp...really handy for envelopes, packets, string, tape etc. Even though everybody comments on their small size it is still a surprise to see such a tiny knife when you open the box. They are probably of little use anywhere except on your keyring, but if you want an everyday blade to keep with your keys the Bug is exactly what you need. Excellent service from HH as always. Diamond quality. I've now bought FOUR of these; 2 for mois, one for my father and one for a friend. Such quality from Spyderco. Solid little knife.

Like others have said, it really feels like it should be far more expensive.

I've also bought one of the next one up as well.

Spyderco have always made classy knives, this knife is seriously no exception.

Amazingly useful, un-offensive and did I say how useful this little thing is?

Plus I need not say anything about Heinnie Haynes' service- I've frequented this shop for many years and not one have I had to wait longer than a single working day to receive what I have bought.

This was the first Spyderco I ever bought. It's a dinky little knife and cheap as can be. However it comes out of the box shave sharp. For such a cheap knife I was fully expecting there to be a bit of give/movement of the blade when fully open, there isn't.

Truely fantastic knife for the money. So good within a few days I ordered the Honeybee and Grasshopper.

Also makes me feel confident that if I ever wanted to spend more money on a pocket knife then Spyderco must be the ones to look at, if the cheap ones are THIS good.....

PS very good service from Heinnie...thank you.

been carrying this mini blade for a few months now and used it every day razor sharp out the box packs a lot of cutting power for such a tiny blade solid build by spyderco i have this knife on my key ring and use it to cut open boxes at work cuts through 5mm cardboard no problem and at a price to meet any budget the only thing i would say to improve on is the lanyard hole could be a bit bigger to fit a standard split ring having said that this knife is a must have (Posted on )

Arrived razor sharp, and very quickly. It is absolutely miniscule; length of my first finger fully open. Firm lockup and audible click. Way out performs the SOG micron in terms of price, build quality, size and blade edge. Comfortable fit in the hand too, unlike the SOG. Possible one handed opening using the Niteize #2 S biner - note this will not fit through the Bug's lanyard hole, use a keyring. Perfection in miniature. (Posted on )

Excellent little things. Incredible that, for most daily tasks, such a small blade will more than suffice, nothing bigger really needed. Wear mine around my neck on chain: wish spyderco would consider bringing out a titanium version that would make it lighter.

Easy to open this one-handed with few minutes' practice. This isn't some tiny give-away type gimmick: it is a proper knife, scaled down to really interesting tiny proportions.

I had read and seen pictures about how small this knife is, after all that is the reason I ordered it. However when I received it I was shocked to see it up close.

This thing is so tiny and spec legal for the UK that nobody should be able to argue with you about it. It (in my opinion) is just too small for anyone to complain about unless you are in a building where such items are now allowed by policy.

I've just got this knife today (excellent service from Heinnie as usual). It's small, very small but perfectly suited for the purpose in mind, that is to add to my survival keyring as legal EDC in the UK. I've just tried it out and made some feather sticks with it. It also produces a nice shower of sparks from a ranger firesteel. It doesn't weigh much and doesn't add much to the keyring to make it bulky in your pocket. A great little knife! (Posted on )

This knife really is tiny and you will never fully understand the size until you actually put one in your hands. It will fit on standard sized keychains. It's definetly a two-handed opener because the Spydie hole is just there for the style. It is pretty solid and cuts through a lot of small stuff with ease (paper, plastic bags, packaging, zip ties etc...).

Only negative is that mine didn't come "arm hair shaving sharp" and I can feel the edge quite easily without cutting myself.

This is my second Spyderco Bug. It's sharper than the first one and shaves arm hair easily. The last one didn't. It has a weaker spring than the last one and doesn't feel as secure when open, so 4 points and not 5.

Wow! This knife is absolutely tiny!
The size makes it perfect to put in a survival tin or similar; its sharp and so probably a better alternative to what you get as standard.
My only complaint is that the locking mechanism isn't particularly secure, it doesnt take much to fold the blade back.

Other than that, its a great knife for a great price.

Heinnie's service was impeccable; I ordered it on Monday and it arrived on Wedsnesday, with the standard (free!) shipping.

Is this legal too carry in uk
A:
In answer to your question of whether it is legal to carry a rescue knife, section 139 of the Criminal Justice Act 1988 currently prohibits the possession of an article with blade or point in public without good reason or lawful authority, with the exception of a folding pocket-knife with a blade not exceeding three inches.. If the blade exceeds this length then you must demonstrate that you have good reason to possess a knife, for example for work, fishing or other sporting purposes, in a public place.

For your record I have attached a link below to section 139 of the Criminal Justice Act 1988.
