Spyderco Roadie

Spyderco Roadie

In essence, the Roadie is a highly evolved penknife that is more practical and user friendly than its historical predecessors. It’s most distinguishing characteristic—the “Double Dent”—is a pair of symmetrical dimples in the blade that provide a solid purchase for a fingernail-free two-handed opening. Far superior to a traditional nail nick, they also do not collect dirt or debris.

Unlike traditional penknives, the Roadie also features a subtle index-finger choil that increases control of the knife during use and acts as a safeguard against unintentional closure. These enhanced features elevate the Roadie far beyond the conventional penknife and set a new standard in socially friendly cutting tools.

The business end of the Roadie is a sheepfoot-style blade ground from Böhler-Uddeholm N690Co steel, a high-performance stainless steel alloyed with cobalt, molybdenum, and vanadium. Its wide blade profile and full-flat grind create incredible edge geometry for a keen, scalpel-sharp edge. The broad blade also provides real estate for the distinctive “Double Dent” feature that allows the blade to be easily opened with a pinch grip of the thumb and index finger. Although not intended as an opening feature, a Trademark Round Hole™ in the blade proudly identifies the Roadie as a Spyderco product.

At the base of the blade near its juncture with the handle there is a subtle forefinger choil (finger groove). Placing your index finger on the choil provides excellent control of the edge and creates a natural “stop” to help prevent the knife from closing unintentionally. Both the choil and the opposing thumb ramp on the spine of the blade feature jimping (textured grooves) to promote a positive, non-slip grip.

Unlike a traditional slipjoint, the Roadie’s blade is held open by an improved notched-joint mechanism. Its spring also forms the handle’s full-length back spine, giving it structural strength and providing a foundation for the durable fiberglass-reinforced-nylon (FRN) scales. The injection-molded scales are contoured for comfort and feature a recessed Spyderco “bug” logo on both sides.
The Roadie represents a quantum leap in the evolution of modern pocketknife design and sets a new standard of excellence for the breed. We are confident that yours will serve you well.

  1. Perfect EDC from SpydercoReview by
This is by far my favourite EDC knife.
Light, easy opening, superb quality, opens with a satisfying click, retains edge.
Only issue is it’s so compact I’ve lost two so am now on my third.
Marvellous delivery service from HH ad ever.

  2. Small elegant but yet still a solid toolReview by
I had my worries about the size, fit and finish of this tool, but once i’d opened the package and had it in hand, all my worries disappeared. Ergonomically the Scales fit nicely in smaller hands, add a lanyard to the back for a pinky hold and big hands will love it to. Blade was razor sharp OTB is a lovely size and shape and is completely none aggressive, and I doubt anyone would even question you had it if pulled out because all you can see is the small blade. Beautiful tool well made and feels great. Cuts and cuts all day and week long (Posted on )
  3. Original and fun little knifeReview by
I love the look of this little knife and the build quality is nice.

The blade is ok for light cutting but due to the thichness, it is useless for slicing. It wont cut paper or cardboard well at all.

I had to buy it to complete my uk legal spyderco collection (still missing the pingo) and while it doesnt get much use, I do really like it.

  4. Safe EDC option you can take anywhere.Review by
I bought this knife as a safe, discreet carry for work and i'm pleased to say it fits this criteria perfectly.

It's small size and rounded edges make it anything but intimidating, if Teletubbies carried knives this would be what you found in their pocket. The backspring is nice, strong and snappy I love the added bonus of a half stop. The FRN scales have a nice feel too them and the Spyderco logo is a nice added detail i got the orange model and am pleased with the colour.

I'm happy to say that i can't even nit-pick at this knife, the price seems a lot when looking at it on the internet but when it arrives you'll forget how much it cost you.

  5. Give it a chance.....Review by
First of all i must say i paid for this item on a Thursday at 4.30pm, it was through my letter box the next morning by 11am. Now this isn't a one off for HH, they do this time & time again. I can only assume they have bred their own delivery fairies, so well done the HH team.

Now the Roadie. I bought one of these in grey 2 years ago, i hated it, thought it was useless & sold it on within 2 days. Yet as i was packing it away for the new owner i did think it was well made, just kind of odd looking, not a "proper" Spyderco.

Anyway fast forward 2 years & i've just bought an orange one. I clearly didn't give it a chance first time around. Keep in mind this really is more for light use than most Spydies. This has just kicked my Bug off my keyring, as always excellent build quality & i'm a big fan of the steel used plus absolutely nobody could get offended by the looks of it even in todays touchy society.

OK you could argue about the price, it's only £5 less than an Urban. But try making one yourself for that money.....

  6. You get what you pay forReview by
I've had my Roadie for a few months now. It's my EDC and gets used for all the things you use a penknife for - opening boxes, blisterpacks, packing straps, cutting apples, sharpening pencils etc. It tops out at making feathersticks for fire lighting in my book - I wouldn't want to do anything heavier with it.. I haven't needed to sharpen it yet!

As I have large hands, I've added a short box lanyard to the back which gives me more length to hold and makes it easier to find in my pocket :)

Everything about this knife says quality and it's simply not showing any of the signs of wear and tear that cheaper knives have quickly displayed (bolsters, pivot).

I just hope I don't ever lose it and have to stump up for another one!

  7. really really really tinyReview by
This could do with been shown for scale against a coin or something, its minuscule. I'm genuinely surprised its got so many five star reviews, because although its nice quality its so small, what could it be used for? opening envelopes?, its virtually the same price as the bombproof 3G Fallkniven LTC. I wouldn't put this in the same class as a UKPK or a squeak ( best spyderco IMO ) its more like a ladybug/keyring knife. Ive already given mine away, very disappointed, not with the quality just the size. (Posted on )
  8. Excellent UK EDC knifeReview by
The pictures and knife site reviews do not put over how tiny this little knife is, it is smaller than my Victorinox Cadet . The blade is non locking and has good edge retention like other Spyderco knives. If you after a small knife (in particular a small backup knife) then you cannot really get anything better for the price. The only drawback is if oyu have very large hands then I could see this knife being a little combersome. (Posted on )
  9. Small but mighty Review by
This knife may be small, but don't let that fool you. It's superb for opening boxes, plastic straps and cutting tape, all the things I do with mine.

It tucks into the change pocket in my jeans and you forget it's there until the moment you need it .

    I highly recommend it.

Also superb service from HH that we've all come custom to

  10. Strength beyond size!Review by
This knife was a birthday present to me and im very happy with it.
My first thoughts out of the box: Its incredibly lightweight, the handle colour is bold and strong, the "double dent" is eye catching and functional, the blade is shorter than I imagined it would be.

After some use. I use this as my "weekend knife"it stays in the pocket of my "weekend jeans".
Though it is a strong and capable knife it certainly isnt a serious working knife due to its diminutive size. It is easy and comfortable to carry all day without even knowing that its there when in use however (opening boxes, packets, cutting open oranges etc) it has proved to be strong, reliable and razor sharp! that little blade really does take and hold an edge.

All things considered this is a great, handy little knife to own and a pleasure to use. its equally at home in a pocket or on a keyring.

  11. great edcReview by
as previous reviews have said - forget the price - I would have liked it to be £15 cheaper but the quality and edge retention of the n690 steel, the strength of the mech , the size /ergonomics mean you'll struggle to match the cutting power / convenience of this with any other knife,. Most impressive is how it does this while being so small. It really can sit on your keyring or in your pocket without you knowing it's there. It's perfectly up for tackling almost any urban everyday duty. (Posted on )
  12. Excellent knife, excellent service. Review by
Firstly HH service needs to be praised again. I ordered another knife incorrectly, returned it to HH, received refund and then ordered & received my Roadie, all within 3 days. Few companies could process a single order in that time frame, let alone two & a refund. Their customer service appears unbreakable.

As for the knife it was what I was expecting, Sypderco quality (you got what you pay for), and a non-offensive blade shape. If I was being really fussy I would like another half inch on the blade and bit more depth on the handle. But that's another knife. This is a very capable knife and with the choil comfortable to use for appropriate tasks. Get it and you will soon forget about the cost!

  14. Small but perfectly formedReview by
When I first opened the Roadie, even though I'd read the reviews, I was still surprised at how tiny it is; it really is titchy! But having owned it for a few months now I think that that is actually it's strongest feature; it sits in your pocket almost unnoticeably until you need to use it, and when you do get it out it's size and look are completely innocuous in public. Having said that, the blade is very sturdy and capable, it's like having a chunky little scalpel in your pocket! The handle is smooth and curved and feels lovely in the hand. Quality from Spyderco as you would expect, and despite its fairly high price tag for such a small knife, it is worth every penny. Sure, you can get similar sized knives much cheaper, but you won't LOVE them the way you will this one. I would say if you're debating whether it's worth stumping up this much for such a little knife, do it, you won't regret it. It may seem a lot for not a lot of knife, but what you actually get is a cracking little blade that you'll treasure. (Posted on )
  15. ExcellentReview by
Lovely little edc, keep it on your keys and forget about it till needed, had black one since launch and it cuts well above its little size. A must have UK friendly blade (Posted on )
