Spyderco Yojimbo 2

Spyderco Yojimbo 2

The Spyderco Yojimbo 2 is the second generation of the original Yojimbo folding knife designed by Michael Janich.

The heart of the Yojimbo 2 is its 7.9cm CPM-S30V wharncliffe blade. Unlike blades with a pronounced "belly" to the edge, its perfectly straight edge cuts with full power all the way to the point. This maximizes the cutting potential of the compact blade and also makes it a supremely functional utility tool.

The broad blade has a high hollow grind for exceptional edge geometry, while retaining a thick spine for strength and enough mass to ensure positive one-handed deployment.

  1. A powerful package!Review by
I was persuaded on the functionality of this knife when I cane across a video of Michael Janich explaining the concepts on Jerry Miculek’s YouTube channel, followed by Janich’s Evolution of Spyderco’s Yojimbo 2 on the Martial Blade Concepts channel.
I had the opportunity to train with Bram Frank many years ago & always regretted not getting his Gunting when Spyderco produced that.
The Yojimbo 2 is an excellent knife for everyday use and multiple applications. It was a little smaller than I had imagined and like all Spyderco knives, more expansive than when I first started buying them. The quality however is evident - feels very secure & natural in the hand, love the blade geometry & the compression lock. An awesome package.

  2. Tip StrengthReview by
Just a quick comment re a point raised by Jon L in a previous review regarding tip strength. One of the advantages of the hollow grind is in fact increased tip strength. Assuming same blade stock thickness and a full flat grind the blade would be thinner at all points down to the edge (assuming same behind the edge thickness in both cases) Imagine two lines drawn on the tip 'slope' down to the edge bevel - plenty of metal either side with the hollow grind. No probs with tip strength. Another advantage of the hollow grind - apart from its superb cutting ability - is the fact that a nice thin edge can be maintained with successive sharpening. A truly superb knife, a masterpiece !. (Posted on )
  3. UtilityReview by
Ive had this for a couple of months now and deliberately waited to write a review. What a superb knife! I originally bought it because it was slightly different to most other folders out on the market. I was aware of the concept behind the design, which primarily was for SD, however its use as a utility blade is outstanding.
From cutting up fruit, opening packaging and a multitude of other uses it really is a useful tool. The tip is needle like, so not meant for abuse, but strong enough to handle most tasks. The knife is light, opens easily with one hand and not too bulky in the pocket.
A wharnecliffe makes a great blade for utility uses, and it's also easy to sharpen.
Very pleased with this purchase and top marks to Heinnie as usual.

  4. wicked little thing!Review by
Nice an slim but well sized, and I love the way the blade dominates the knifes form, beautifully made, with an ancient blade type that go's right back to the seax, so you know it will works for many tasks, excellent locking system and a good handle, all things get made with compromises, this knife has all its perimeters very well balanced so it easy to adapt too and that says to me it not perfect but is seriously good! 5. Excellent Review by
Fantastic knife fits really well in the hand and the Wharncliffe blade is my first of this design but it seems to work perfectly. It feels solid in your hand. Excellent service HH (Posted on )
  6. SpydercoReview by
It's a Spyderco, I agree with all previous comments. Ergonomics are absolutely spot on, fills my hand perfectly. Nothing to fault at all, deployment silky smooth, more so than any other Arachnid I've owned. Blade, well, it's S30V, 'nuff said. On the vids Mike Janich says he wanted something similar in closed length to a Delica for ease of pocket carry, but open it's longer due to longer blade. To fully understand the knife see Mike Janich on You Tube. Absolutely brilliant, a work of art. (Posted on )
  7. Epic!Review by
    I'll keep this short.
The quality is brilliant and all lines are spot on, the blade is sugical. Razor sharp out the box. It's not an everyday beater but more of a precise tool. That being said I use mine as a box opener, package opener or any other task I've so far put to it. In short this is a must buy!

  8. 100% F*RReview by
Its a knife with superb ergos and its a fi*g knife. If you expect anything else, its like buying a katana for chopping woods. With that in mind,i would choose the PM2 over the Y2 every time-it can do what the Y2 does, and so much more. (Posted on )
  9. A serendipitous purchaseReview by
Firstly, I agree with everything Jon L, below, has said.
In addition, I was very fortunate to choose it when two other Spydercos were eliminated from my shortlist by being out of stock.
It truly is a hand-filler with very comfortable ergonomics, the non-slip G10 scales providing a surface like fine-grade emery board - but in a good way, and I expect this knife to become a rather regular and versatile companion.

  10. Superb, deceptively sized folderReview by
A superb knife. Compression lock is smooth and it opens lightning fast.

Ergonomically, the handle is excellent and welds itself to your hand despite looking really rather wierd at first glance. The G10 is very grippy more so than a number of my other Spyderco G10 models, which gives confidence with sweaty paws or in the rain.

Kudos to Spyderco for fitting a bare steel clip the black ones get bright (tatty) edges fast, regardless of whatever lovely expensive surface treatment they give them.

Feels ideal with either the index finger on the blade for fine control or the thumb on the back for real chopping power.

The edge is scary sharp out of the box and despite being a 'wharncliffe' there's still quite a bit of point for penetration of thick webbing. Despite being a 'martial arts' design, I can see this doing serious donkey work. Can't fault the S30V either. My only slight concern is the hollow grind might make the tip more fragile than a full-flat grind. That said, the blade thickness is meaty.

For food prep, a more traditionally 'bellied' or leaf shaped blade will make it easier to do the 'rocking' cut on a chopping board, but it's a fine slicer all that said.

    Superb. Buy one

  11. MagnificentReview by
I have already owned an original blue Yojimbo and didn't think the new version would be a great improvement. WRONG it's a quantum leap ahead whilst still keeping the original basic form. It's gone from a nice quirky utility blade to a world class folding "cheesecutter". A must for Spyderco collectors or knife fanatics. (Posted on )
