Spyderco Urban Lightweight

Spyderco Urban Lightweight

£71.95

Description

Spyderco’s popular SLIPIT knives are non-locking folders that combine the advantages of one-hand opening and clip carry with the legal permissibility of a non-locking mechanism.

Originally released in 2009, the Spyderco Urban Lightweight exemplifies all the best qualities of the SLIPIT concept and combines them with the weight-saving advantages of an injection-molded fiberglass-reinforced-nylon (FRN) handle. Its blade is machined from premium Böhler-Uddeholm N690Co steel—a high-performance stainless steel alloyed with cobalt, molybdenum, and vanadium. Its full-flat grind and leaf-shaped profile provide an exceptional balance of strength, low-friction cutting performance, and point utility. A prominent index-finger choil (finger groove) helps prevent unintentional blade closure, while Spyderco’s Trademark Round Hole ensures positive one-handed opening with either hand.

The Urban Lightweight’s textured FRN handle scales are anchored to the handle’s solid steel back spacer, which provides structural strength and serves as the spring for the knife’s notched-joint non-locking pivot mechanism. The handle also features a reversible deep-pocket wire clip that allows left or right-side tip-up carry and keeps the knife tucked low in the pocket for a discreet, socially friendly image.

A great N690 UK legal knifeReview by

I’ve had a Byrd Tern for nearly five years and what a fantastic value knife. Still going strong. Recently I was seduced into buying a N690 bladed UK legal carry knife. I was really disappointed but still fancied an N690 upgrade from my 8Cr13MoV class norm. I turned to the Spyderco Urban which has been on my radar for years, possibly held back by FRN scales over my preferred G10. However needs must and I finally pulled the trigger. I previously said that Tern surpassed expectations. The Urban fully satisfies higher expectations, scale material excepted. In many ways I compare this with the Tern rather than the UKPK. The handle length is fine for a four finger grip for small to medium hands. Peeps with large hands may find it a tad small. The blade is about the same length as the Tern but has a longer cutting edge due to tang/choil/handle differences. In practice it perfectly safe and comfortable though the Tern wins out at the half-stop. Full flat grind so a great slicer. A great size when there is no need to push the UK legal edge limit.

I’d like to say just buy one but I seem to have got the last one in stock.

i've had the urban for a bit over a year now. this knife is very close to perfect for me, great slim profile, you dont really feel it in your pocket. the opening is easily done one handed but also closes securely. the edge is easy to sharpen and holds a very fine edge. its also simple to take apart and clean when needed. if you dont have one, get one. you will love it (Posted on )

Received my Urban yesterday from Heinne's usual speedy delivery service, and I was not disappointed .I have the squeak which is a great little knife but sometimes is lacking in blade length for some tasks,so I decided to get the urban which for me is the perfect EDC the blade is super sharp but it can bite if you are not careful as I found out the hard way .But to sum it up I have a large collection of knives and the Urban has to be the best knife I have brought,so if you haven't already got the Urban get your self one you will not be disappointed. UK legal pocket perfectionReview by

Having previously owed both the Squeak & a UKPK this is bay fay my favoured choice out of the slept family. The Squeak on a couple of occasions i found the blade length a little too stout & found myself wanting more blade. The UKPK (my example anyway) didn't feel it had as a strong back spring & folded a lot easier than both the Squeak & the Urban. For me the Urban is the perfect UK EDC knife, it doesn't look too threatening to NKP, plus it has a better steel than the UKPK. Since owning it 18 months ago it hasn't left my pocket. (Posted on )
The 'Goldilocks' of UK-friendly EDC knives Review by

I've used mine for a few months now, replacing the Squeak, UKPK & Dragonfly (and many others before) as my current favourite EDC knife. I might have just found the my ideal UK friendly, daily carry knife! In my opinion, Spyderco have hit the sweet spot with the Urban Lightweight - not too big to be intimidating; not too small for most everyday chores, moderate cost, quality high-carbon steel, a welcome greater resistance when opening & closing the blade than the other notch-joint, non-locking Spyderco knives, practical leaf-shaped blade, ergonomic grip & a firm hold from the textured 'jimping' on the thumb ramp of the blade hump & the index finger choil. Like many other Spyderco knives, it's great for lefties like me with the ambidextrous one-hand opening & the moveable wire clip that sits the knife low in the pocket for discreet carry. Word of warning if you do move the pocket clip - don't completely remove the retaining screw - just loosen it enough to pull the clip free!
I too generally prefer G10 scales to FRN, however in practice the FRN works well enough. Lack of a lanyard hole is a little irksome on the SLIPIT range however you can easily attach a small retrieval lanyard through the wire clip.
All in all, I'd highly recommend this knife.
I've teamed my Urban Lightweight with an EagleTac D25A Clicky flashlight (1 x AA), Leatherman Micra/ Squirt PS4 mini-tool, Gerber Shard/Artifact pry tool & a Hinderer Investigator pen (aluminium) - all from Heinnie - to have a well-balanced, versatile, highly functional, light -weight, slimline & low profile EDC set up.
Fantastic service from Heinnie as always - fast, well packaged, a friendly knowledgable team if you need advice, no quibbles if something is not right. The paragon of online retailers.

Superb UK legal carry knife thats just the right size.Review by

I have a few knives that I can carry everyday. A few Spyderco and other makes.
The Spyderco UKPK is a superb knife but it can be seen as being quite big and can get some comments from non knife people who see it.

The Spyderco urban just doesn't seem to attract the same comments. It cuts just as well but with the blade being that much smaller it goes mostly un noticed where the UKPK may have caused comment.

I also own one of the original G10 Spyderco urbans but the new lightweight version is getting more and more pocket time as it fits my needs of a pocket knife so well.

Prefer my urban G10 which has a proper half stop I like the tension on the back Spring which is excellant the major downside is the half stop which isn't one before it engages the blade has already come into contact with a finger I can't see how spyderco signed off on this it seems to be an obvious flaw the maniagos are usually pretty much perfect I have over a dozen spydercos I'd still like a ladybug size and quality slip joint (Posted on )

Another Spyderco Maniago blade for my collection. It has a great edge and the only criticism I have is that yet again, the Spyder hole has needed a few minutes of minor surgery with a needle file to round off the rim which in common with my other Maniago products was noticeably sharp.
Superficially, this knife is similar to the UKPK although more expensive. Personally I think that the grade of steel used and the stronger retention spring are worth the additional cost. Despite the FRN scales it has a solid feel and makes an excellent lightweight pocket knife with the added advantage of being UK compliant.

Expensive but very good EDCReview by

My goal is to find a knife that is small enough to aviod negative attention but large enough to carry out a range of tasks.
I bought this knife after returning a Spydercon Chicago which I was dissapointed with for many reasons.

While we're on the subject I should add to the long list of people praising Heinnie Haynes customer service, who were excellent (Thanks guys).

So the Urban: I have carried it for about a week now and over all am very pleased with it.
From taking it out the box it was VERY sharp, everything lined up as it should and it was well finished. A quality product in other words - I can't really fault it.

It's obviously not a large knife but even with my large hands it feels okay to grip and use.
Opening with one hand it easy. It's quite stiff/tight for what it it though I actually quite like this as this adds to it feeling more sturdy for it's size.
In comparison when opening something smaller (chicago/squeak size) I found my little finger stepping out and getting scratched by the blade when deploying.

I have used it for all sorts - office/warehouse/fabric/food/etc. and it's held up fine.
after cutting a load of cardboard it will still just about slice paper but will probably want a little touch up soon. compared to other knives I've tried it's done well to stay this sharp.

That said; I do a variety of work so on a day I know I'm going to be doing lots of heavy cutting I'd normally take something meatier or a Stanley knife.

When carrying it I always use the pocket clip which is excellent. I hardly notice the weight is there and it's very discreet.
If you carry the knife clipped in your back pocket you'll probably destroy the clip fast through sitting on it by the way. Front pockets are fine.
I have shown the knife to a few people and no one seems to take offence to it either.

I was initially apprehensive of the FRN scales but in truth they actoully suit the knife and feel fine.

Negatives?
Well if you got really heavy handed with it I can't imagine it lasting very long. That said it's not that type of tool so why would you use it for prying/jabbing/cutting things that are not rally meant to be cut to start with.

Though it certainly feels like a premium product, I'm not sure it justifies the £62 price.
You do get very good blade steel (I'm no expert mind), but considering that a UKPK is £10 cheaper and that an Ambitious/Persistence is over £20 cheaper you really need to be sure this is justifiable to you.

To me I feel for the extra money I'm buying more sheeple-friendliness rather than more knife.
The UKPK is probably the better tool but an extra 1/2" makes quite a difference to you people perceive it.

Like my title say this has to be one of the best EDC knives u could have for the UK. I've had this spyderco for a few weeks now and it has never left my side it is perfect in size I get four finger grip and fits perfectly in that little pocket on the left side of ur jeans. It holds it sharpness and is really smooth to use. In is my first spyderco and won't be my last, it is perfect if u feel the UK PL is too large for ur liking and the squeek is too small.

Oh and p.s the retention us quite strong too u have to put quite a bit of force compared to other slip joint knives to close the blade.

Had this knife for a month. Super super sharp out of the box. So much so that I cut myself twice when first using it without even feeling it. Easy to resharpen, and very light. Good strong clip and I feel confident that I won't lose the knife, unlike other knives which I have lost due to weak clips. I would always recommend this knife...and it looks good too! (Posted on )

This is a very light weight knife, it is also shaving sharp out of the box. Because it is so lightweight it starts off feeling a little insubstantial (no steel liner) but this is easily offset by the quality of the blade. I have bought two of these, one for a present, and I would happily buy another one. This is a cool bit of kit. (Posted on )

I'm not familiar with N690 steel. What is the hardness of this, or if you do not know the specs, any experience to how it holds an edge through use?
A:
The N690 Cobalt Stainless Steel is made in Austria by a company known for making steel that can be made into sharp knives and surgical instruments. This steel is very similar to 440C steel, and it has 1.07% carbon content. N440C steel has a carbon content ranging from .95 – 1.07 percent. The N690 is a high end stainless steel with an alloy that is common in many good knives. It is a durable knife steel that is wear resistant. It is also very hard steel.

This steel contains the important martensitic chromium steel with cobalt, molybdenum and vanadium. This steel can be hardened to a very desirable hardness levels. The surface finish is fine ground or polished.

N690 is sometimes compared to 440C steel. Many knife makers do not believe that 440C is a the best steel for comparison to the N690. The 440C steel is a high-chromium stainless steel. Knives made of 440C steel are easy to resharpen, and it is an excellent steel for its price and performance. .

The N690 is a good steel and it is very similar to the VG10 from. One prominent knife maker gave the steel a variety of knife makers’ tests. The results were good. They now have access to large sheets. Knife makers consider the VG10 from Japan to be a better steel for comparison than the 440C. Its overall performance and ability to hold an edge is superior.

The N690 grade of steel is produced by a small Austrian steel plant that also provides steel for surgical instruments. The Austrian Bohler Company says that the N690 can be made into hardened cutting tools with excellent edge-holding property, such as knife blades. .

The N690 steel is so good for making knifes that one prominent knife manufacturer use only N690 steel. This steel has the right carbon content and the right cobalt content. An Austrian steel manufacturer, who is the current source for N690, is considered to be a worldwide leader in their production of N690 steel. Their steel composition is as follows: carbon 1.07%, chromium 17%, cobalt 1.5%, manganese .40%, molybdenum 1.10%, silicon .40% and vanadium .10%. The key to the hardness of N690 is the addition of cobalt in the steel matrix. The cobalt creates uniformity in the structure within the steel. The value of cobalt in a knife blade is it produces a fine edge with excellent edge retention.

Unfortunately Spyderco do list the Rockwell of there blade steel.
